I found an incredible map of sewers in central Boston for 1811. It shows clearly who had direct access to waste disposal and who had to carry their waste into the street to dispose of it. Also, just how subdivided and tiny some tenements could be. More literal History from Below! 🗃️
A hand drawn map of several blocks of Boston in 1811. Each property owner’s name is written in ink. Some are incredibly narrow, others much less so. Sewers are drawn in red ink. Many of the smaller properties have no sewer access.

Is taking CO2 out of the atmosphere best achieved through greenhouse gas emissions reductions, or carbon capture and storage? Given current projections, the answer might be both. A process called carbon mineralization looks at locking away CO2 in rocks and mineral precipitates permanently. (1/5)

History of Acids Cont'd: In 1884, Svante Arrhenius and Friedrich Wilhelm Ostwald proposed that the atoms of acids and bases separate in water—acids releasing hydrogen ions (H+) and bases producing hydroxide ions (OH-). This explained why acids and bases neutralize each other to form water (H2O).1/6

As I noted in a previous editorial, folks working in environmental science, engineering & health are really in the survival business: you can go 3 min without air, 3 days without water, 3 weeks without food

A new study has mapped 35 years of river changes on a global scale. “We think this is maybe the most accurate map of river flow ever made,” notes co-author Colin Gleason, associate professor of civil and environmental engineering at UMass Amherst. Read the full story: www.umass.edu/news/article...
These maps illustrates significant changes in 6,167 reaches of the largest rivers on earth—44.2% saw decreases in streamflow and 11.9% saw increases over 35 years. Of nearly 1.5 million of the smallest, upstream rivers on earth, 17% of rivers saw a 1-5% increase in streamflow (blue) while 9.9% saw a decrease (red) over 35 years.
