Spotted Joe-Pye Eutrochium maculatum Joe was a real Mohican healer named Schauquethqueat (settler name Joseph Pye). He used the E. purpureum for fevers in the late 1700s. The legend of him saving a colonial town from plague is a myth. His memory is honored by the name nonetheless. #NativePlants

It's the little things that add up. If everyone who was fed up with fascism stopped buying from Amazon, Bezos would have to think twice. If every person walking the paths pulled Garlic Mustard (Alliaria petiolata), it wouldn't spread to the wilds from every entry point. Have faith. Take action.
Garlic Mustard is one of the first things to sprout in the spring. It has rounded teeth, and a distinctive through variable leaf shape. Sprouting early is one of the advantages that allows it to infiltrate so quickly. Garlic Mustard with the tap root exposed.

Make sure it's Garlic Mustard! Check for the tough white taproot. It will smell like garlic if you scratch it. The attachment between the root and rosette is flimsy, and the rosette will snap right off. The root will then activate a dormant bud and start growing again. Grasp by the root beneath the rosette when pulling. At this early stage, before it bolts and starts budding, you can just set it up somewhere to dry. I generally just use some deadwood to prop them up in the air. Lay it in moist soil and it may recover. Later there will be flowers and seeds to worry about. An uprooted plant that has flowered can still set seed. No worries in that category right now.
