in which Ray Palmer continues his lost weekend in Brazil, swinging a sword at small animals and tiny yellow people. meanwhile, Jean Loring waits a whole three weeks before moving on. do I believe she was evil enough to kill Sue Dibney? the answer is still no, but she certainly had her fun.
Review excerpt - Ray's been declared dead, following the plane crash that left him stranded in the Amazon, and so we see Jean Loring moving to finally replace Ray's place next to her in bed. In her defense, what was she supposed to do, wait more than a couple weeks to move on from her dead husband? And since we're asking rhetorical questions, was Superman not available to search for the body? I realize it's usually bad faith to question why Superman doesn't pop in to solve everyone's problems in DC Comics, but given that they tell us they buried an empty coffin in Ray's grave, we're left to wonder why he didn't spend a few minutes looking for his pal. Also, did they bury a normal sized coffin or a tiny coffin? Probably a normal sized coffin, but you just laughed at the image of them burying a little toy coffin, so my work here is done.Sword of the Atom #2, cover by Gil Kane!

in which we pop down to the Amazon basin for the most unnerving midlife crisis in comics history, as Gil Kane delivers a career performance with a downbeat return to his signature character
Review excerpt - The series begins with a decidedly adult slice of melodrama, as Ray Palmer finds his wife Jean Loring in passionate embrace with another man.
This wasn't really out of left field, is the thing - the Atom's marriage had always been rocky, a strangely mature character beat tracing its roots all the way back to the 1960s strip, updated for a darker turn in the age of Reagan. The referent here is something more like The Big Chill, another story about maturity in an age beyond youthful ambition - and indeed, if you grew up reading Kane's first go at The Atom in the 1960s, you were probably just the right age to have experienced the dismal dregs of disappointment as an adult. If that sounds like a fun premise for a superhero story, well, I did say it was a decidedly adult turn.Sword of the Atom #1, cover by Gil Kane!

in which Atlantis Attacks sloshes forward, and Tyrannus faces his expected comeuppance as Dr Strange rallies a depressed Daredevil to serve as the cavalry. the real action here is in the backups, which feature work from Jim Lee, Whilce Portacio, and John Romita Jr / Klaus Janson 🤯😮😳😵🎉
Review excerpt - Tyrannus, as you can imagine, ultimately has no interest in playing by Lord Ghaur's rules, and sets about leapfrogging his place in the pecking order by summoning Set to Earth himself using the ancient Book of Kells. That goes about as well as you'd expect: Tyrannus was never all that competent, and he succeeds not in summoning Set but a snake-themed rando from the Dark Dimension who proceeds to eat Tyrannus forthwith. He gets better, eventually, not that you were worried. From there its a simple matter for Hornhead, Spidey, and Dr Strange to clean up Tyrannus' ersatz Save Our Society org. Conway, working with Mark Bagley, deserves credit for writing a credible mimeograph of Nocenti's run: Matt Murdock is suffering through a severe depressive episode, ultimately only drawn back to the world around him despite his better judgment.Daredevil Annual #4B, cover by Ron Frenz and Joe Sinnott.
