Young people are being told all sorts of advice after incurring huge student loans for jobs at companies that wouldn't hesitate to underpay them or lay them off at any time. They survived mass shooting drills from childhood. They're being given advice that does not reflect the present moment.

With so much competition in the job market, and so much advice given to applicants, it can be challenging to determine what actually helps someone get hired. I went through an entire interview process only to lose a job because the company's lawyer required me to have a green card or US citizenship.

If the arguments about iced coffee include "first impressions still matter" and "it can be distracting" then I would push back and ask about that company's (unwritten) dress codes, open office layout, as well as its recruitment and retention of staff members who are BIPOC, disabled, and/or parents.
