Correct. An important corollary: A defense of doing a job well, by its own standards, is also a defense of the human beings doing the job. Professional standards are a central terrain of present-day class struggle.

Failing to nurture our joy, relational experiences, connectedness, aesthetic appreciation robs us of our ability to APPRECIATE and CARE in all meanings of those words. To change patterns we must notice them. To know our power we must attend to subtle points of leverage, not just react to threat.

To maintain our ability to engage with complexity (and thus address the systems and patterns that rob us of thriving) we must deliberately exercise our ability to attend to and engage with complex positive experiences. It is fundamental caretaking of our best problem-solving skills.

It’s about exercising our skills at identifying and leveraging positive things. Under stress, our cognitive bias is toward noticing threats to us. That’s adaptive in a strict ‘don’t die’ sense. Thriving? Nah. Natural selection doesn’t care if we are happy.

I think the biggest damage to the art community was the obsolescence of gallery sites (y!, deviantart, etc) and the rise of scroll-by social media, like twitter and even tumblr. Art is not ''content'', you shouldnt need to post art every day (or every month!) to be relevant. This mindset sucks.

The latter is going to result in struggling students (not necessarily with the work, just overall life load) making themselves small; communicating less, withdrawing engagement in the work….is often seen as confirmation of their fault or badness rather than consequence of leadership choices.

There’s always leakage. People do things for reasons that make sense to them. The drive will be there. & a prof teaching fear is a violation of stewardship. Theres an ethical difference between using shame to stop a peer from cutting a line & a teacher shaming a class for low homework turn-in.

My reading sums up that you can shame people *out* of some antisocial behaviors that aren’t compulsive, but you cannot shame anyone *in* to much at all. Learning/creativity require brain states that are not compatible with shame.

No, it would not be ruined. Excessive friction while wet might cause superficial felting on wool coating, but high heat is required to shrink it to the point of unwearability. If he hung it close to a fire or on a radiator it’s conceivable that could damage it.
