I can somewhat walk again in an immobilizer boot. Which is better. But yeah this blows. I had to skip an out of town wedding and just in general it’s been over a month of pain.

It’s been 5 weeks since I did *something* to my foot. I can’t drive. I’m just stuck at home and it feels like the pandemic all over again. Finally getting an MRI on Friday.

Other things that made me yell “oh shit” today: a red tail hawk just biffed into my storm door two feet away from me, quickly recovered, and chased the bird who was chasing him like it was Top Gun: Maverick and he planned that maneuver even though it was below the hard deck.

I watched this so many times on HBO as a kid. Haven’t seen it since the 80s.

Maybe that’s how I’m used to it? Same here. I forgot about that. And that’s typically how it happens to me now - I’ll be laser focused on a problem and won’t notice it’s silent.

Oh that’s the worst. I worked in a basement at Creighton University years ago, right next to the morgue for the med school anatomy lab. No windows. That is such a weird feeling to descend from and emerge into darkness. All of us in that dept took frequent walks and always went to lunch.

I could easily get wrapped up in code and not notice. Especially where my last two home offices sat, there would be no obvious sun movement and I could sit there until dark. That’s when it would trip me out like “holy shit how long have I been sitting here?” Music helps feel like time is passing.

For years, essentially starting with the pandemic, I would sit in my home office in silence while I worked. Like a psychopath. I got a radio now tuned to the local classical station that I listen to in the mornings and it’s amazing how much better life is with that playing.
