The internet is by design a panopticon. It is a system for collecting and sorting a vast amount of personal data at scale and delivering to a handful of insitutions for a variety of purposes, most of which are opaque to the users. It cannot function otherwise.

The internet has corroded trust in many ways, the most obvious one that is has made it much easier to lie to people at scale. But surveillance is arguably an even greater insult to trust, and this is something that is baked into the internet’s function.

Trust is an essential lubricant to the function of an open and democratic society. We have to be able to trust that our fellow citizens will voluntarily uphold the common good. Without it, social relations are reduced to power and leverage, and society increasingly becomes a race to the bottom.
