One of the biggest myths is that men rape by mistake. Like, "Oh, they need consent training." But research is very clear: Sexual violence is not a mistake. It is an intentionally made decision by people who know they don't have consent. They just don't prioritize consent over things like status, power, domination, and sexual gratification.
For my research, I got a certificate of confidentiality from the National Institutes of Health, so my notes couldn't be subpoenaed. One of the reasons I call them perpetrators in my work is because every single person I interviewed confessed in that context. The first question I would ask them was, "When you received that email from Title IX that you were under investigation, did you know what it was about?" Every perpetrator I interviewed said "yes." If sexual assault were a miscommunication, you would be wondering, What have I possibly done wrong? That is not the way that any of them reacted because they knew.

The Holocaust being defined as the sin of Europe par excellence means Jewish nationalism cannot be a “normal” (albeit dangerous) European nationalism like all others; it is seen by one side as justice, which in turn requires the other side to defeat it to end that guilt. This is bad for everyone.

We would all have better conversations about Zionism if we viewed it as a nationalism like all others, akin to diaspora Serbian nationalism from Canadian Serbs. Not a civil rights or social justice cause, but also not a way Jewish people are abnormal or ontologically evil.

I have been seeing braindead takes like "antisemitism isn't systemic" but the way that the Trump admin is bestowing and revoking conditional whiteness onto Jews suggests that antisemitism is very much systemic, and closely connected to other forms of systemic oppression, especially islamophobia.

I've heard people make claims that AI would lead to a new Renaissance, but I didn't imagine it'd happen like this:
Screenshot of a Tweet from Pope Leo XIV. It reads:

"In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgen to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity."

I am open to discussion about this and don’t believe all tech is good or even neutral. I just think it’s useful to distinguish between the tech and the governance and ownership questions.

The goal shouldn’t be to limit the development of AI per se. The goal should be to fight to make the AI companies regulated, taxed, and/or socialized. To make sure we all have a say and a stake in the development of the technology.

Max Berger @maxberger.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
This argument might seem academic, but I think it’s central to how we engage with the politics of technological change. The goal isn’t to stymie progress, but to ensure the benefits are widely shared, and the risks are minimized. If AI replaces labor, we can socialize the wealth it generates.

AI could be a massive boon to humanity, just as the internet or social media could be—but not without changes to how markets and companies are governed. If oligarchs are always allowed to monopolize the benefits and socialize the costs of new technology, the technology itself is irrelevant.

Max Berger @maxberger.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
Totally, that’s true of virtually every technological advancement

Max Berger @maxberger.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
If we lived in a world in which workers and other stakeholders had a say in how the company they work for is run, and strong government regulations that shaped markets on behalf of consumers, new technologies could be beneficial. The problem is never the tech—it’s always the oligarchy.

Max Berger @maxberger.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
AI is just like the internet, or social media—it’s a technology which could be used for maximal benefit, but instead has been captured by a handful of oligarchs. I think it’s always important to distinguish between new technologies and the ownership & governance structures they’re embedded within.

The GOP cut funding to the IRS because *audits work* and they fundamentally don't believe rich people should have to play by the rules.
Line chart titled "Revenue per audit," subtitled "In-person audits, 2010-2014." It plots average revenue and average cost per audit by taxpayer income percentile, poorer to richer, from the 0–5th percentile to the top 0.1%. Source: Boning et al. 2023, "A Welfare Analysis of Tax Audits Across the Income Distribution."

Across the bottom half of the income distribution, revenue and cost track closely, both around $3,000–$6,000 per audit. Above the median, revenue pulls ahead of cost: about $10,000 vs. $5,000 near the 90th percentile, and about $17,000 vs. $8,000 at the 95th–99th. At the top, revenue jumps to about $31,000 for the 99–99.9th percentile and about $90,000 for the top 0.1%.
