Aaron Swartz, coding prodigy and hacktivist who helped develop RSS and was a co-founder of Reddit, died by suicide after facing $1 million in fines and 35 years in prison for felony charges, just for downloading pdfs of research papers with the intention of making them accessible to the public.

AI is conscious AND it is my girlfriend AND it is my slave. A perfect scenario for me, a normal person. Not gonna think too deeply about this. Now do all other living human people deserve the level of investment devoted to my Tamogotchi slave girlfriend? Not so fast.

My latest @newscientist.com cartoon
Panel 1: a large robot (composed of AI servers, network switches, storage arrays, and power distribution units) and a human are talking.

Professor "You don't want to destroy humanity do you, lLLM-A-9300x?"

Robot "Haha. What a silly question, Professor. I have no desires or feelings of my own whatsoever."

Professor (relieved)"Oh good."

Panel 2: they walk on. The robot continues "I am merely a tool of the company that created me. And that company, being composed of humans, will naturally have humanity's best interests at heart."

Panel 3: The professor is conspicuously quiet.
"Right?" says the Robot.
…
More silence

"Professor?"

A friend’s custom game (“Worm meets Disco Elysium” vibes) has us roll for will, basically, to endure any nontrivial degree of pain. It makes things swingy mechanics-wise, but the “gritty realism” vibe it gives scenes really suits us.

Fairly minimalist. It renders markdown files live. There’s tons of nice core features and community plugins, but it’s really “add the features you need only”. Starts out as markdown with great QoL, the you build it up as you go.

OH. right! i get it now!

i get why AI is so depressing to me. because covid already shrunk my world to almost nothing, where almost all of my life revolves around socializing and watching videos on the internet (which is being ruined by AI) and creating creative works through coding (which is being ruined by AI), often using open source tools and libraries (which are being ruined by AI)

i already had so little and now even that is being rotted away before my eyes

Ironic that the two biggest things moving people towards more efficient computing are LLMs preferring text-based interfaces and LLMs causing a consumer hardware shortage.

Curious. My second thought after "Neat!" when seeing the Obsidian CLI announcement was it's probably good for integrations and automated workflows like the AI-made/AI-using ones that pop up every day on r/ObsidianMD. I'd never use it either, but I didn't think it'd been made for me.
