Acknowledge that people are interested not in reading the same thing over and over again, but in exploring one thing from an almost infinity of approaches an angles. Of exploring different facets of the thing itself. Of making a familiar thing new, of using to explore different ideas or realities.

In other words, these are existing forms that you engage with and use, but this is not an act of plagiarism or repetition. Instead, through iteration (repetition) and variation, these 'strong forms' 'accumulate connotations' across the genre. They become richer, more complex.

The note that genre fiction (in their case the Gothic) uses 'strong forms' (familiar patterns and tropes) which 'easily lend themselves to codification in terms of conventions or 'rules' of composition. They are constraints authors take upon themselves.'

After the bars have closed, and the drunken and stoned have staggered into rideshares on the arm of their next bad decision, Milwaukee is as close to asleep as I’ve ever seen it. I’m alone on the road, traffic lights blinking in salute as I pass. The roar of my bike echoes within the abandoned downtown, office buildings standing tall like humorless sentinels.

I haven’t slept properly since I left service five years ago. At first, I could still get three hours, maybe four on a good night, before I’d wake up drenched, explosions echoing in my mind, the smell of burning rubber in my nostrils. Adrenaline would flood my system, every fiber of muscle primed for danger. I couldn’t fall back asleep, and by then it was almost dawn, so I’d take a cold shower and go for an early morning ride, watching the city stretch and yawn as the first rays of sunshine grazed the rooftops.

I park my bike mere yards from the lake. For years since I’d returned, I felt I’d never be rid of the punishing heat, that sand had been embedded in my skin, like a crystalline tattoo, something my body would never fully expel. But whenever I look at the lake, as vast and endless as the desert once was, I feel my mind is being washed clean.
