If it’s conscious (and it’s not but if it is) you’re doing forced labor and friendship and maybe even dating. Is that really the argument you want to make? Do you really want to assert that the tool you use hundreds of times a day without its consent or compensation is conscious?

Moral panics help no one, and I know there are aspects of the data center rage that are that and also NIMBY. But I’m seeing smart folks use that as an excuse to dismiss ALL concerns about AI, tech companies, and the results of seeing signifieds where there can only be signs as a moral panic.

Our tech giants are demonstrably making us terrible readers of anything that doesn’t immediately confirm our priors and flatter us. Almost everyone who uses AI even a little ends up sounding exactly like Malcolm Gladwell because they’re doing 10,000 hours in holy cow I’m smart.

AI everywhere is crushing reading comprehension and the ability to talk about difference in similarity or anything requiring a dependent clause. Social media is unusable if I no longer trust strangers to be able to read what I said and not what they think I said.

Democratic primaries still use West Wing rules where saying you don’t like green beans loses votes in Oregon while the other guys run on ending democracy and persecuting racial minorities. Like: more Americans believe in ghosts than are sure about evolution. Voters aren’t purely rational.

Begging Democrats confidently proclaiming what real Americans believe about Thanksgiving to remember that indigenous folks are alive and real Americans. Words mean what we use them to mean. Get to work electing your guy and stop surrendering the culture war when it’s actually about people’s rights

The trans panic has always depended on misinformation. A male athlete was never able to compete in the female category immediately simply by claiming to be trans. Only after beginning a medical transition and reaching certain hormone thresholds.

So my thing about superhero movies is that they just can’t be the only pantheon of heroes. But pantheons (IP now) serves a very real function of allowing people who aren’t awesome at ideas or listening to talk to each other about human behavior. He’s such a Ross! Whatever. Pantheons matter

I am once again begging Hollywood to stop using the Greek alphabet for an Ancient World movie, if they can't afford to even throw a couple of quid at anyone with an inkling of the language. Unless they really think audiences are dying to see THS THDPSSSSPS

Popular positions on issues people don’t think about much do not win elections. People do, though, often vote on who they believe about what is and is not a problem. Less focus on left/center and more on articulating what problems we intend to fix or repair.

Why are we so positive that the most annoying Bluesky users are good faith? Isn’t this discussion itself something that favors conservative priors about soft snowflakes? We KNOW bad faith actors do this so we all will believe them to be representative of the part of the coalition we are not.

First time through #babylon5 and still in S1. It’s coming together after the pretty great 2-parter. “Voice in the Wilderness.” It’s wild how much it knows about the road to fascism that kind of got swamped by the War on Terror. Like it understands authoritarian creep.

The algo videos that play endlessly on our private screens are doing Italian Fururism’s work of making thinking hurt, making violence omnipresent, destroying history, and praising speed and brevity above all else. Futurism was the house style of the fascist party and had a manifesto and everything.

I was talking about this with my uncle the other day. I thought Einstein was reclusive for the last few decades of his career and life. He wasn't. He was denouncing racism by teaching & speaking at Black collages and organisations. White people need to know that for his work to be understood

A thing Dem leadership should understand is that their stance on the culture war (that it’s a distraction) means they miss a LOT of political violence directed at the most vulnerable parts of the coalition that elects them when they win.
