My goodness, what an incredible moment. After Justin Verlander secured the final out of his career, Tigers manager A.J. Hinch came out of the dugout...to summon Verlander's daughter out to embrace her dad on the mound.

Well, it nailed my ass. I grew up in Northeast Tennessee and now live in Arizona, though I spent a few years in Upstate NY and New Jersey
A dialect heat map, with the warmest colors being concentrated in the Southeastern United States. Lighter shades of red and orange continue into the Southwest and California. The Northeastern states and upper Midwest are cool blue in comparison.

I drove that road every day growing up; there’s no way he didn’t see the peloton as soon as he rounded the corner at Simerly Creek, which is more than a quarter mile from where he hit them

You've got to think about that famous scene from 'The Rock' (1996). Stanley Goodspeed is holding the "string of pearls" virus container that he's just removed from its housing. He looks Sean Connery dead in the eye and says, "The second you don't respect this, it kills you." That's the energy.

Later the drug dealer gets nostalgic about how in the 90s economy you could give out the first one free. COMIC ◆ www.smbc-comics.com/comic/deal PATREON ◆ www.patreon.com/ZachWeinersm... STORE ◆ smbc-store.myshopify.com
Part 1/2 of an 8-panel SMBC comic update. A group of children, lead by a red head boy, point to a sketchy guy with a beard, a trench coat, and sunglasses, and says "oh! Guys, look! A drug dealer!" The children asks if they can have drugs for free to addict them, leading the drug dealer to bemoan that he can't offer free drugs in the economy, and to ask "what do you even need them for? You get to learn all day, then play video games while people cook for you and make your bed!"Part 2/2 of an 8-panel SMBC comic update. The drug dealer dramatically removes his shades, asking how the children DARE to ask for free drugs in a world where adults are suffering in need of smack or crack. The dealer sends the children home, telling them to think about how selfish they were today. The redhead child says "yes, sir, Mr. Drug Dealer. Sorry, Mr. Drug Dealer." Later, the red head child speaks to his mom, saying a drug dealer was mean to him that day, and the mom replies "what!? What kind of drugs? How expensive?"

A memory model for production async R: mirai 2.7.0 and mori 0.2.0
Two CRAN releases extend R's foundations for production async: bounded queues and `try_mirai()` in mirai 2.7.0, plus mori 0.2.0 graduating from experimental status.

Just released mori 0.1.0 on CRAN — a new R package for shared memory across processes. Parallel R no longer has to mean duplicating your dataset in every worker's RAM. opensource.posit.co/blog/2026-04... 🧵 1/3

mori: Shared memory for R objects
mori is a new R package for sharing R objects across processes via OS-level shared memory. Parallel workers get zero-copy, lazy ALTREP access to the same physical pages — share once, read anywhere.

The planet is a pale blue, swirling with white clouds and glowing slightly lighter blue in place from reflected light.
