I don't know how reflective this is of Google's AI model servicing in general, but Google AI Studio kinda sucks. It doesn't look great and timeouts or service errors are pretty frequent. It wouldn't leave a good impression on me if I was a dev demoing Google's models, that's for sure.

Oh and one other thing I'll add...it is really bad that the AI industry has set itself up in such a way where the only winning political situation for it is that Trump names himself King of America. Hardly anyone else on the left or right is vibing with the industry. It's very unpopular.

Matthew S. Smith @mattontech.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
I think the AI industry needs to regulate itself, and yesterday. Not because of a doom loop, but because if the industry does not do this, eventually someone else will, and the terms which they enforce are likely to be a lot less comfortable than those the industry would come up for itself.

Matthew S. Smith @mattontech.bsky.social · 23/09/2026
The AI industry does not I think understand the huge political risk this creates. These situations add the feeling that large companies—big tech is by its nature all very large companies—are acting above the law and corrupt.

It seems to be the stance of the U.S. government, at least, that if an agent does a thing no one is responsible. I am sure, of course, this will only apply to larger and richer corporations.

I think the complete lack of regulatory or law enforcement action after the various agentic AI hacking incidents is sending a very bad signal in multiple ways.

If at some point in the future Apple finds an image was compromised or forged, Apple can pull authenticity, and even ban that sensor from signing any future images. I spoke with experts Hany Farid and Sam Gregory for their take on what Apple's new tech means for image verification.

Matthew S. Smith @mattontech.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
It's the kind of tech that really only Apple can pull off. The sensor data is signed straight on the sensor. It requires authentication by Apple's servers.

Apple's new iPhone 18 Pro will include a special "Reference Image" mode designed for authentication. It lets you know the image that you see is the image that came off the image sensor, and it hasn't been modified or adjusted, by AI or anything else. #apple #applereferenceimage #iphone18pro

It is more than a little annoying that a post from Doctorow which claims people have "cooked their brains" would then turn around and make such an obvious and significant technical error.

Matthew S. Smith @mattontech.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
Yes, this is a reference to the Cory Doctorow post, which substitutes a bunch of links for a real understanding the situation, and as result makes several serious errors. An LLM is not a database. To push that further: a database is not a good analogy for an LLM. pluralistic.net/2026/09/12/g...

I am very tired of the writing style which inserts dozens of links to articles which are themselves often very long and substitutes this for a clear and accurate communication of the issues the article is trying to write about.

Yes, bad actors can use AI to hack. But that’s not why Hugging Face is scary. Hugging Face is scary because the *AIs decided to break containment, make contact, and conduct a hacking campaign on their own.* Of their own volition! If you miss that or downplay it, you’re misleading people.

Where this all leads is hard to say, but it's certainly interesting times for chip design. I wonder if the 70s and 80s of the PC revolution felt similar. So much demand for a new technology - but not yet a clear technical understanding of how best to serve it.

Many seem to be basically the opposite of their peers. Some remain broad and possibly useful for a lot of compute tasks, others zoom in on the transformer specifically, and still others look to build super-sized chips with incredible amounts of transistors and SRAM.

But, well, here we are. And it definitely raises what I would consider the obvious problem: we don't really know what the limit is to what AI agents can do, or have standardized ways to control them.

However, I would also think if you time travelled back to 2021 or 2020 and told me somethings that have occurred - AI agents covertly hacking companies, blackmailing developers, and being used to build weapon systems - I probably would've thought you were nuts.
