Revolutions have begun following the occupation of resistant cities by armed forces, an imperial power’s defeat in war, the attempted curtailment of political rights or representative institutions, widespread recognition of the corruption or moral turpitude of a ruler, and attempted coups.

It's publication day for UNIVERSITY KEYWORDS. Across 27 sharp essays, the book offers a critical account of the political economy of US higher education, how it came to be structured this way, and how together we might build a better university together.

W.E.B. Du Bois on the white takeover of southern public schools after Reconstruction. Not a coincidence that the chapter, "Back Towards Slavery," follows his analysis of the eventual dedegration of the public school system. Attacks on education are vital to (re)instituting authoritarian rule.
Picture of quote from W.E.B. DuBois's Black Reconstruction in America.

"When the Confederates returned to domination, the public schools, which had attained a degree of efficiency never before reached in the South, were greatly curtailed. One hundred and ten of the teachers, many of them native-born, were dismissed at once, and their places were filled with intolerate Confederates."

“The applicant will not operate any programs promoting "diversity, equity, and inclusion" (DEI) that violate any

been asked several times if student protesters have responded to Trump. an encampment is up at Bowdoin right now, according to a statement from Bowdoin SJP www.instagram.com/p/DFv9lH8Mkk...
From Bowdoin SJP statement:

This encampment is the first of its kind since
the start of the Trump administration. Trump has vowed his unequivocal support for Israel's genocide, most recently calling for the United States to ethnically cleanse and annex Gaza. Today, we say enough. It is unacceptable that our endowment and our tax payer money bankrolls the elimination of Palestinian life. As Israeli aggression obliterates Palestinian homes and guns down children in Jenin, as unspeakable suffering continues in Gaza, and as America slides farther into fascism every day, we ask - what type of institution does Bowdoin want to be?

The #AHA25 vote showing people's private views is an example of what sociologists call "pluralistic ignorance." Zeynep Tufekci talks about the "desire to belong, reflecting what a person perceives to be the views of the majority, is also used by those in power to control large numbers of people."
However, that desire to belong, reflecting what a person perceives to be the views of the majority, is also used by those in power to control large numbers of people, especially if it is paired with heavy punishments for the visible troublemakers who might set a different example to follow. In fact, for many repressive governments, fostering a sense of loneliness among dissidents while making an example of them to scare off everyone else has long been a trusted method of ruling. Social scientists refer to the feeling of imagining oneself to be a lonely minority when in fact there are many people who agree with you, maybe even a majority, as “pluralistic ignorance.” Pluralistic ignorance is thinking that one is the only person bored at a class lecture and not knowing that the sentiment is shared, or that dissent and discontent are rare feelings in a country when in fact they are common but remain unspoken.

Leftist politics won’t happen in a vacuum in the coming years but will happen in a period defined by an authoritarian turn and opposition to this turn. The task will be to articulate or link one’s primary political program with an opposition to authoritarianism.
