As it's Trans Day of Visibility I guess it's a good a time as any to mention to new followers that DailyCannon was founded and is owned/run by a trans man. I think it's the only football site that can say that. Anyway, no surprise we say - support trans people. Every day, not just today.

Happy to share some new theoretical work with @andyperfors.bsky.social that will appear at CogSci this year! We argue (and demonstrate through simulations) that people can determine how much to trust other agents by thinking about how those agents have acquired their knowledge. 1/3
Figure showing an overview of the framework argued in the paper. People decide how much they can trust other agents by taking into account 1) features that indicate how the agents acquired their knowledge (their search process); 2) how many other agents agree, and what the features of those agents are; and 3) indications that reflect how knowable the topic is or how easy the space is to search.

Australian election called against Dutton and the Coalition. I almost want to cry a little - didn't realise how badly I needed this to happen. There was a lot at stake in this election but I know a lot of marginalised people are breathing a sigh of relief. #auspol

Takeaways: musicians better in SJ tasks (but may be response bias) yet show > multisensory integration in a more objective RT task (but may be just better sustained attention, motivation, etc.). SJs show rapid recalibration but RTs don't, so RR probs not due to early sensory latency changes 9/10

Matthew O’Donohue @matthewod.bsky.social · 19/03/2025
Multisensory gain (redundant target effect; RTE) across RT distribution is well predicted by Raab's (1962) race model, except when considering just the fastest RTs 8/10
110
Matthew O’Donohue @matthewod.bsky.social · 19/03/2025
Multisensory integration (race model violations in simple RT task) do NOT correlate with simultaneity perception (Fig. 7). Yet the difference between unimodal auditory and visual RTs STRONGLY predicts the SOA of largest multisensory gain 7/10

Matthew O’Donohue @matthewod.bsky.social · 19/03/2025
We get nice/sexy modality shift effects (previous trial modality affects simple RT on current trial). Paper has more details about novel modality shift effect analyses 6/10

Matthew O’Donohue @matthewod.bsky.social · 19/03/2025
Yet simple RTs do not show such rapid recalibration (see paper for race model analysis showing same thing) 5/10

Matthew O’Donohue @matthewod.bsky.social · 19/03/2025
Simultaneity judgements (SJs) are recalibrated according to the modality order of the previous stimulus 4/10

Matthew O’Donohue @matthewod.bsky.social · 19/03/2025
And yet, musicians exhibited greater multisensory gains for simple RTs 3/10

Matthew O’Donohue @matthewod.bsky.social · 19/03/2025
First, musicians were far less likely than non-musicians to report simultaneity between asynchronous flash-tone stimuli 2/10

⚠️New paper! If you like multisensory temporal perception, this one has HEAPS for you. We looked at simultaneity perception, simple RTs, race model inequality, serial dependence (recalibration), modality shift costs, musicians, and more! Tbh, while I used the word corrupt, what I really think is a combination of incompetence and heavy bias. The latter being a result of both deep-seated bias (e.g. Manc refs) and media/narrative-fuelled bias (e.g. time wasting). But I don't rule out corruption!

Matthew O’Donohue @matthewod.bsky.social · 25/01/2025
That is, I am no doubt incredibly biased towards Arsenal. Despite knowing this, I still can't accept the notion that PL refs give us fair treatment.
120
Matthew O’Donohue @matthewod.bsky.social · 25/01/2025
By that I mean I'm full of Arsenal bias, and recognise yet, but still can't gaslight myself into thinking that PL refs are fair!

Matthew O’Donohue @matthewod.bsky.social · 25/01/2025
Mate, I have a PhD in psychology. If I don't have good critical thinking skills and an acknowledgement of how human biases cloud perception and cognition, then I have little. And yet I am utterly convinced that certain refs are biased against Arsenal.
110
Matthew O’Donohue @matthewod.bsky.social · 25/01/2025
Something additionally egregious is the fact that Oliver looks at the "injured" player multiple times before his decision and it is clearly a big factor in making him give a red. In a sport where players are always actively trying to influence refs with their reactions, that is disastrous.

Matthew O’Donohue @matthewod.bsky.social · 25/01/2025
Officiating of Arsenal games is enough to make me want to forget everything I've learned about human biases from a PhD in psychology and conclude that league refs actually are corrupt. Because at this point I basically think so. Makes 3 pts even more satisfying tho!

NEW: 2024 has just been confirmed as the warmest year on record, and the first to breach the 1.5C threshold. We used a ridgeline (Joy Division inspired) chart to visualise daily temperature anomalies since 1940. 2024 clearly stands out with 100% of its days above 1.3C and 75% above 1.5C.
Ridgeline chart showing the distribution of global daily air temperature differences from the pre-industrial reference period (1850-1900), for every year between 1940 and 2024. Each individual year resembles a hill, shaded in a darker shade of red and further to the right for warmer years. The trend is clearly towards warmer years, with 2024 standing out as first year above 1.5C.
