“We hit a nerve. A lot of people were being affected by this rampant rise in costs and wanted to know what was behind it,” Kim said. “As it happens, private equity has changed a lot of industry landscapes.”

Good. Everything PE touches seems to go to crap. The term “private equity” has come to represent “leveraged buyouts…in order to ruthlessly profit maximize and…self-enrich” before dumping the bought-out thing in the trash, and rinsing and repeating.

The Great Chicago Fire Changed Building Code Forever
The Great Chicago Fire, among other disasters, has shaped Chicago's Building Code and Fire Code. Brick became a key material in our design vernacular.

1. We do not *need* so-called "A.i.". We did just fine (better, in fact) without it, only a few years ago. Remember "A mind is a terrible thing to waste"? 2. Ergo, we do not *need* data centres. Bring the cost of tech back down for everyday users! 3. When the *heck* did "compute" become a noun. 🤦‍♀️

Schools as “brain gyms” calls to mind this section of my class (a brain gym in its own right) genAI policy:
*The only way to actually get anything out of this course is use your own brain. Dependence on AI to do
your work is basically you robbing yourself of your education. Consider: You wouldn't go to the gym and let
a robot or forklift do the lifts and cardio workout for you, would you? If you did, you wouldn't *actually* be
exercising. It's exactly the same with academic work and your cognitive/intellectual “muscles.” Many
studies (I’m happy to send links) have established a link between AI dependency and cognitive decline.
*The assignments for this course are designed to teach you certain skills and dispositions. These include
learning to read texts closely, to think critically, to situate phenomena in their contexts, to recognize the
complexity of the human heritage/experience, and to articulate yourself in speech and writing. Like
learning to play a musical instrument, these skills and dispositions, to say nothing of mastering the course
content, can only be attained when you do the work yourself
