Even so, it’s so very sad to see such a lurch to the right from the Tories. It’s a truly sad state of affairs for anyone desperate to once again see cross-bench support for serious climate action.

www.theguardian.com/commentisfre... After reading the Tories’ announcements today I arrived at the very same conclusion. The only thing Toynbee doesn’t flag here is what happens if Reform implode under an avalanche of sleaze. They might become the only show in town again & scoop up Reform votes.

I need to double check this but the repowering is expected to yield a x10 increase in Community Benefit Funding (CBF). The current CBF contributes approx £0.5m but the new fund will be approx £5m (see news story). Repowering is likely to be ⬆️ CBF £ elsewhere. www.scottishpower.com/w/plans-to-r...

At a micro-economic level, that's £60 less in our pocket every month That's ~£60 less into the economy Multiply that by 31 million homes, that's almost £2bn*. A very good reason to get a grip on our energy supply & efficiency *I know not every home will see this incease. Bit of artistic licence.

I'm sure station staff across the country will be overjoyed with the improvements in air quality that this should unlock. The air quality in big covered stations like B'ham New Street, Glasgow etc. is appalling (year is 2026).

Does extreme heat & the climate adaptation agenda begin to drive a new insulation drive (and maybe reversible heat pumps too) in homes that need both heating and cooling? Lord knows climate mitigation wasn't enough on its own to push this at scale, nationwide; in the UK at least.

I suspect the swift embrace of these AI tools time saving tools is itself a function of the financial pressure universities are under & and efficiencies being made, leading to greater time pressures on the average academic.
000
Prof Matt Hannon @matthannon.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
There's also a strange bravado associated with it, like academics are 'winning time' back and unlocking a cheat code to efficiency & success. These are undeliably important & powerful tools we should embrace but not at the expense of being able to generate, analyse & critique info ourselves.

Prof Matt Hannon @matthannon.bsky.social · 08/09/2026
It's amazing how AI is creeping in to every day teaching/research/policy/consultancy tasks at uni now. If we lean on these tools hard enough, we'll forget how to do many of things that make a university education truly worthwhile like synthesizing, interpreting, critical thinking etc.

The S-curve is well and truly in train. For those who think a Reform/Tory govt would derail this, think again. Also, we need tonnes more power generation to power this electric road fleet. We can build out renewables quickly and cheaply in comparison to FFs. This is what a transition looks like.
