There's just so many interesting patterns in the world! I want to quit my job so I don't have to rush everywhere so much and I can slow down and just look at moss and stuff

You should all absolutely reply with your own texture photos, btw

Other people's con photos: panels; meeting famous authors; group shots with friends My photos of World Fantasy Con last year:
A photo of a stony beach. As in, straight down at the stones. No sea, no horizon. There is a worn brick with the word WARN stamped in it, though! That's cool!

The autistic experience of scrolling back through your photos: every now and then, a photo that is fully and entirely just a texture you liked
A close up photo of some tree bark with lichen. That's it. That's the whole frame.

I don't tend to use the effects—I leave any and all cleverness to Eric and Wilson, they're far better at it than I am anyway—but it seems like there's a lot not in 4.0 yet. Once they are in, tho, the interface does feel a lot more modern and useable. I'll jump as soon as I can, tbh.

The Death of Robin Hood is not a great film, I don't think, and could reductively be described as "Geralt and Merida star in The Northman", but it is kind of haunting me nonetheless. It has that same hypnotic, dreamy pacing as The Northman, or The Green Knight, and the soundtrack is stunning.

My particular ADHD brain can't stay focused at only 1x, especially when I already know what's being said (cos I said it, and am reading it alongside, too), so I miss more stuff at 1x than I do at 1.8x, weirdly. I'll often check pauses are the right length at 1x, tho, esp. after a big deletion

I mean, my "editing audio" is very much just "cutting out breaths and flubbed lines", then @intenselyeric.bsky.social and @curiousmind.bsky.social do the actual audio wizardry after, so I usually go about 1.8x—1.9x... to the point my voice at 1x sounds weird now, and I can't judge pacing that slow

oh man, had gotten all excited about Audacity 4 and how pretty it was, only to discover play-at-speed isn't implemented yet. Like I have the patience to edit at 1x!

It is becoming a running in-joke in our family that each and every one of us do this without even meaning to about: squirrels; pigeons; robins; great tits; dunnocks; and, though only when reviewing the wildlife cam footage, but most exciting of all, hedgehog.

The angel on my shoulder: "ADHD is a complex + layered disability, defined by external perceptions of its challenges and the ways it irritates others, with an understanding of the internal experience only slowly being uncovered through community conversation" The devil on my shoulder: "Squirrel!"

Matt Dovey @mattdovey.com · 06/09/2026
One of the inherent contradictions at the heart of my current existence is that I abhor the reductive stereotype of ADHD as just shouting "Squirrel!" mid-sentence whilst also interrupting whatever I'm doing to shout "Squirrel!" if I spot one

my favorite story i’ve written (“revolutions, as told by a humble rice farmer”) is out in @podcastle.org! 🥹😭 referencing tang dynasty poetry it asks “what if we focused on this RANDOM RICE FARMER instead of the empire??” it’s a deconstruction of nationalism & v queer podcastle.org/2026/08/11/p...
poster with the words “revolutions, as told by a humble rice farmer”, “fantasy”, “3500 words”, “history from the bottom-up, emperors get decapitated, but we keep farming rice” “@thelialao”

Sometimes as an NYT books columnist you find yourself quoted in the Atlantic by Helen Lewis, who believes two odd things: 1. That nobody is reading Pratchett anymore (instead of all the time, as they should), and 2. That Pratchett’s politics are hard to pin down, and Reg Shoe is not a fucking hero.

De rigeur probably not exactly the right phrase there, but on reflection I quite like the unexpected implications

Matt Dovey @mattdovey.com · 12/04/2026
I mean it was 100% not any attic I've ever seen, let alone possessed, but that's de rigeur for dreams right, the duality of "this is not mine in any recognisable way except, somehow, emotionally"

Always a big fan of crafting entire edifices around a single pun. That sort of commitment is too often lacking in these days of ironic detachment and plausible deniability over investment in anything.

Had a dream about a dream about my late father-in-law last night, wherein his spirit visited to tell me where to find some things in the attic, and it all feels weirdly meaningful given that neither he nor the meta dream have ever figured for me before. Weirdly discombobulated as a result.

Duolingo has many flaws, I'm sure, but it sure does know its audience when it teaches you "I want to quit" as the first sentence in a module on discussing work

“Sex testing has switched from genitals to genes to testosterone levels, and now back to genes. While the stated goal for these policies was to uncover males pretending to be female, they have never found any. Instead, they identified and excluded intersex women.” Sex testing in sport harms women.
theconversation.com
Sex test used in IOC’s new transgender ban more likely to exclude from Olympics intersex women who were assigned female at birth
Genetic testing is now required to participate in women’s events in the Olympics. But the new policy oversimplifies biological sex and risks discrimination against some female athletes.

People still constantly bring up my AI Statement page in the Scream zine. Some folks say it made them cry! I was going to be more eviscerating but instead felt the best way to make my point was just to be totally raw and vulnerable in a way AI can't be. sara-century.square.site
Scream mask on a black background This zine was not created by AI. It took me a year to write, from early 2023 to early 2024. I spent several more months agonizing over edits, desperately rephrasing sentences out of coherence and back again. Even with all of that work, it isn't perfect. It will never be perfect. I will never be perfect. Imperfect people will read it and I love that for us.

This zine was not created by AI. I wrote it and rewrote it during a really hard time in my life. Many times, it seemed like I'd turned 40 and had been unceremoniously dropped back to Square One by life. I couldn't see how I could make anything work. So, I made a zine.

This zine was not created by AI. Every time I almost gave up, I worked through it instead. By the time it was finished, it felt like a small epiphany for how I wanted to make art going forward.

This zine was not created by AI. Finishing it was a gift I gave myself when I felt devalued and defeated. It's a love letter to myself, horror movies, and I guess to all of us.

This zine was not created by AI. It was created by me.
