a favorite bit of writing on Dolly: David Cantwell on "Coat of Many Colors" "I am poor, but I will be more than that. I *am* more than that. Despite your contempt, the things I love are worth loving."

Coat of Many Colors is not a documentary or even a memory, but a story she's telling herself. The adult Parton presents this childhood story says a lot about the survival tactics of poor kids generally, and of Dolly Parton specifically. It might, for example, explain Parton's flamboyant stage dress through the years. More substantially, it tells how a poor kid from the Blue Ridge Mountains has to make sense of life if she has ambitions, as we know Dolly Parton most certainly did. ...I am poor, but I will be more than that. I am more than that. Despite your contempt, the things I love are worth loving. And since my mother slaved over this amazing coat for me, I must be worth loving, too."

I had to stop going. The Deep Fried Texas Salsa from 2018 could not be beat.

I was hoping for your help with something. (Please RT for reach.) Is there a particular font that’s instantly recognizable to someone who lives where you do, and appreciated/recognized/hated there, but completely unknown elsewhere? Road signs, street names, transit, infrastructure, stuff like that?

Yesterday I discovered Ray Bradbury’s There Will Come Soft Rains. Since it’s usually published as part of The Martian Chronicles, I made my own cover for the story and wrote a little about it. mattdoane.com/blog/there-w...

A cover I designed for Ray Bradbury's "There Will Come Soft Rains."

I really enjoyed The Billion Dollar Spy by David E. Hoffman. It's an incredible true story that reads like a narrative novel, and soon to be film starring Russell Crowe. Rogue Heroes, also by Ben Macintyre, is great WW2 story.

My new personal site is finally live. It's built with Eleventy by @zachleat.com, and I just want to say thanks for creating and maintaining such an excellent project. I'm really proud of how it turned out. mattdoane.com

I haven’t read it, but have looked into it. I believe it’s more of a generic “god” and using your creativity as a spiritual connection.

Great piece. I grew up watching Jackass and you’re right—it is wholesome. The stunts are fun, but we’re all there for the reactions and support from our friends. The show, and our lives, wouldn’t be the same without it.

I’m currently reading All Hands on Deck by Will Sofrin. The story of the ship used in Master and Commander and moving it from New England to SoCal. Great book for fans of the film. share.libbyapp.com/title/9157883
