The Dartmouth provost's decision to stop writing by substituting AI-assisted text production is a great opportunity to have the kinds of conversations every institution should be having about AI use in higher education. www.insidehighered.com/opinion/colu...

Dartmouth’s provost has stopped “writing.”
Dartmouth’s provost raises a tension we should examine.

I agree with almost everything here (the struggle doesn't have to necessarily arise from research)

We know how to teach books in the age of AI: small classes, close reading, research-engaged learning (which is how you ’let students see you struggle’). The issue is nobody will hire and pay the requisite # of faculty to offer this.

Yes, as @biblioracle.bsky.social points out--the only way to counter the desire to cheat is with the desire for learning

ABSOLUTELY. From Matt Dinan: "The challenge of our moment is not primarily intellectual, but sentimental...Passion creates a unity of purpose and urgency that is the antidote to the feckless, superficial distraction of the algorithmic age." #education www.nytimes.com/2026/08/17/o...

Also, in some ways, the short section on Socrates at the beginning of the Classical Natural Right chapter is the key section in the book, and I wish I had said a bit more about it, but we simply could not discuss everything there. Thanks to Sam & Matt who are smart, fun, generous

In brief, NR&H is one of those books you need to read for yourself, and the only real response to it is to then study the books it itself interprets and think through the problem of natural right for yourself in our time and place.

I think that Richard Kennington's classic article on the book, Velkley's article and book, and Cathy and Michael Zuckert's writings on Strauss are some of the best guides. I also really like Jeff Bernstein's forthcoming book on Adorno and Strauss, which I blurbed.

Douthat did his best to bear up under the peal of silence during his recent podcast chat with Martin Heidegger (appreciate @mattdinan.bsky.social for transcribing) mattdinan.substack.com/p/interestin...
Heidegger: I have explained the theme of my Rectorate in my inaugural address, “What is Metaphysics?”

Douthat: The “nothing nothings?” Or do you mean “The much-lauded ‘academic freedom’ will be expelled from the German university; for this freedom was not genuine because it was only negative”? Do you think, you know, the Trump Administration has been successful, finally, in instituting some of the reforms you’ve been advocating? Do you think that HHS under RFK Jr., isn’t actually a view of science that incorporates the nothing?

Heidegger: I’m not really familiar with the American university system.

Douthat: But don’t you think you, maybe your bedfellows, have been at least a bit influential on…Stephen Miller, at least?

Heidegger: Clears his throat

Douthat: Ok, ok. So I understand if you don’t want to talk about that. But

Beyond helping establish DHS itself in 2003, Mr. Mitnick was a senate-confirmed Trump choice for General Counsel for DHS in his first term. I've talked with him a few times, and he's not a man for hyperbole. So bear that in mind when you see him calling out DHS's "lawlessness, fascism, and cruelty."

John Mitnick
@JohnMitnick
I helped to establish DHS in 2002 and 2003 and later had the homeland security portfolio as a White House Counsel and served as General Counsel of the Department.

I am enraged and embarrassed by DHS’s lawlessness, fascism, and cruelty.

Impeach and remove Trump—now.

The deadly shooting in Minneapolis today was a straight-up execution of a protester by Trump's federal brownshirts.

The thugs wrestled him to the ground. They pistol-whipped him, then shot him multiple times. They murdered him.
