Sports are not a morality play. But this is, objectively, hilarious.

One of my fundamental sports beliefs is that referees don't care who wins the game, and that it's really better to watch sports this way.

Sometimes people tell me soccer players would just all be nba stars if they were born in America.

This is something I've grown to appreciate (even love?) about American soccer culture. It would be great if the USMNT program could figure out how to use our weirdness to its advantage. (No, I don't know exactly what that looks like.)

I don't make predictions, but the Belgium matchup is decidedly #notbad for the USMNT.

Sports stresses ranked: 1. NCAA Tourney Stress (Basketball is the most stressful sport for me to watch.) 2. World Cup stress. (This should maybe be #1, but my history with basketball is longer.) 3. NFL Playoff stress. (What am I going to do with my weekend in January if the Packers lose?)

I didn't watch the USMNT with a few thousand people in a college stadium, or buy a pay-per-view and pledge my life to Conor Casey, or drive six hours to watch Jeff Larentowicz try to run a midfield, for some goobers who hate my guts anyway tell me I can't enjoy this team anymore

Not just this, but 17 players on their roster hadn't played a club match in more than four months when the World Cup started because the league was suspended after their country was bombed. What these players have had to overcome is remarkable, and shameful.

“A deep love of country can coexist with ambivalent feelings about how the national team performs on the field. If patriots can disapprove of their country’s military adventurism… there is nothing fundamentally unpatriotic about not wanting the U.S. to do well in the World Cup.”
theconversation.com
As an American, should you feel guilty about rooting against the US in the World Cup?
It’s one thing to pull for your national team when patriotism feels uncomplicated. It’s quite another when you aren’t feeling very proud to be an American.

Eroding a virtue: AI trains people to expect instant answers – and that’s bad news for patience
Patience is a virtue that researchers have linked to many parts of well-being. But it’s also something that needs a bit of practice and training – and can be undermined by instant, easy gratification.

Like any high status-relatively low pay white collar knowledge based profession, writers and academics over-extrapolate from a small subset of performative power pros. The movers and shakers, the group chat frequent posters, etc. Every writer is not using AI. Not even the majority, I’d wager.
