Yes. Newly minted phuds should be allowed time for their diss to sit & simmer, and like good chili, get far better/more complex. I am glad I did NOT rush to pub my Hephaistion diss. When the Heph/Krateros book I'm writing now does come out (30 years later)? It'll be different...and SO much better.

AI isn't reliable enough to get even a hamburger order right, but reckless Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is pushing to expand artificial intelligence across the U.S. military, including AI-enabled targeting. "Would you like fries with that obliterated girls' school?"

Parents took me to a drive-in double feature; 1st show was something banal I don't even recall, suitable for a 4-year-old. 2nd feature, by which I was (supposed to be) asleep: a Western. I woke up RIGHT at the end, as the bad guy was shot, dead center of the forehead. STILL remember that.

I saw folks discussing trades as hard on the body w/ no real future advancement opportunities past a certain point, compared to white-collar jobs. I may've misunderstood but "reach-a-certain-point-and-nowhere-else-to-go" is how I'd define a dead-end job. Not sure that fits the trades, quite.

Jeanne Reames @mathetria.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
...so (7/6, extra!) rather than saying, "Trades are a dead-end!" let's start thinking about them in wider context and present them as a perfectly viable option w/ good pay that may not end up as a long-term career. BUT can provide a bridge that (comfortably) allows people to chose a 2nd job later.

...he's an electrician, (6/6) but wants to be a writer and/or lit agent, so is interning at an agency, w/ no pay. He can DO that because his union job supplies him the paycheque + health care. Eventually he'll leave the trades to do something else w/ the BA he got while finishing trade school...

Jeanne Reames @mathetria.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
...plus (5/6) it may be a perfectly respectable choice for some of them, at least for a while. A lot of trade workers DO eventually go back to college, and they make great students once older. They may then transition into a different job altogether. My son (now almost 29) is one of them...

...(4/6) who may 1) not have an interest in jobs that involve college-type education, and/or 2) are not ready (yet) FOR college. Ergo letting them consider trades while in high school AND not making it sound like it's for dummies/the lesser choice is smart. "Dignity" is not a rotten word...

...and that's (3/6) not dissing them. It's seeing them real. Furthermore, a lot of kids are just not ready to go to college immediately. They do better after a few years of maturation (esp. boys). The reasons for that we can debate all day, but in the meantime, we need concrete options for kids...

...for whom (2/6) college wasn't in the cards. But speaking as a college professor for the past 30 years, I see a LOT of kids who shouldn't be in college. Not their bailiwick. They were funneled there as "but of course," then do poorly and feel "stupid" when they crash out of a place not for them...

The idea that people want AI oversight to happen "all of a sudden" ignores years of research, warnings, and policy efforts. The delay hasn’t been a lack of awareness; it’s been because of years of industry lobbying against regulation, political resistance, and inaction.

American coffee generally is bad. I've spent too much time in the Mediterranean and after I came home the last time, finally broke down and bought a LavAzza machine (and coffee, of course). I gotta be desperate to drink American coffee these days. (And I do love tea, as well, so will opt for that.)

Incredible. First Secretary Mullin claimed that DHS had identified 15,903 noncitizens on Nevada’s voter roll. Then DHS officials told a skeptical Nevada, no no no, that’s just people we flagged. Here are the names of 185 people we KNOW aren’t citizens. All 185 were citizens. DHS got 100% wrong.
When the Department of Homeland Security sent Nevada a list of 185 names last month that it claimed identified noncitizens who had been improperly allowed to register to vote, state election officials got to work.
On Tuesday, the state sent a strongly worded rebuke to the federal government: Every single person on the list was a lawful citizen.
"As for the 185 individuals, our records indicate that they were citizens," Greg D. Ott, a deputy attorney general in Nevada, wrote, according to a copy of a letter sent to Department of Homeland Security officials obtained through open records requests.
"You have provided nothing of substance to suggest otherwise."Following the meeting, Ms. Vogt sent a clarifying email to Nevada officials. "I also wanted to be sure I clarified that we did not reduce the 15,903 to 185," she wrote. "We've manually reviewed some of the 15,903 and confirmed 185 are not U.S. Citizens."
Now, Nevada officials are saying even that 185 number is wrong. They also took issue with a letter D.H.S. sent them in early September, in which the agency reiterated its initial claims about nearly 16,000 noncitizens on the rolls and pressured state officials to review each case in a letter to Nevada officials in early September.
