For #FridayReads on #BookSky I'm reading "Death of the Author" by @nnedi.bsky.social.
Cover for "Death of the Author" by Nnedi Okorafor. It has the silhouette of the bust of a Black woman with braids facing to the left. The silhouette is atop a patterned textile with computer chips as the pattern.

For #FridayReads on #BookSky, I'll expand on my thoughts on @victorlavalle.bsky.social's Lone Women.
The cover of Victor LaValle's "Lone Women" which shows a psychedelic background of green and pink with a tiny house in the center that looks like a photo negative. Pink trees surround the house, nearby an orange silhouette of a woman in a dress floats by gothically.

Time for another #FridayReads on #BookSky. I've been reading "The Underground Railroad" by @colsonwhitehead.com which explores the experiences of the teenager Cora after her escape from slavery via the Underground Railroad.
The cover of the book "The Underground Railroad" by Colson Whitehead. It shows a red-orange background with trains snaking their way across it. Text notes that the book won the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award.

I'm currently reading "Klara and the Sun" by Kazuo Ishiguro.

Check out the changes from Fall 2025 to Spring 2026 where 45-64 (especially men) and 35-44 men are the only groups to have increased support for Trump over that period:
A chart titled "Young voters swing against Trump" showing the change in Trump's net approval between fall and spring polls by the Yale Youth Poll. Young voters have the lowest net approval of Trump while voters 45-64 (and men over 65) have the highest net approval. The biggest changes between the fall and spring polls are among women 18-22, men 30-24 women 35-44 who have dropped their net approval and among men 35-44 and men 45-64 who have increased their approval.

And a recent UC budget request shows that for UC, the state funding per student has been roughly constant from the 2010s to early 2020s.
A stacked bar chart showing trends in University of California per student average expenditures for education by source. It shows that State General Funds have been flat at roughly $10,000 per student from 2010-11 to 2023-24. During that period UC General Funds increased in 2017-18 but have been generally constant around $3,000. Tuition and fees have increased from $6,370 in 2010-11 to $7,230 in 2023-24.

Here's a chart from a PPIC report showing how state support per student for UC and CSU has halved from the 1980s to the 2010s.
A line chart showing General Fund spending per student at the University of California and California State University from the 1980s to the 2010s. Per capita spending has dropped from over $20,000 to just over $10,000 for UC and from over $10,000 to under $7,000 at CSU. Source is from the California Budget Project report "From State to Student."

Having recently finished Annihilation recently, I was excited to see that @jeffvandermeer.bsky.social was going to speaking at the Malta Book Festival. Definitely not disappointed with the wide-ranging talk about craft and his inspirations.
