Brilliant! Many thanks, the honky hissy flappy alarm that saved Rome!🤣🙏

Your valuable, entertaining, yet mildly worrying search for 'quack' made me wonder about the 'honking' of the alarmed geese that saved Rome that time and whether there was a Greek word for honking. But then I worried if that's the right English word for goose noise 🤷‍♂️

Wars are extremely hard things to justify. It is intrinsic to what they are that they tend to death, destruction, and misery. Given this and some knowledge of history, one's default attitude towards powerful people purporting to do the world some great benefit by war should be extreme scepticism.

Jesus. Another boarded up unit. This is all so fucking wasteful. Running everything for the benefit of speculation rather than commerce is so destabilising. All the pointless destruction of stuff that made things feel normal, even the dull shit. The knock-ons always unforeseen, chaotic.

Unregulated inequality has turned the American dream into an oligarchic nightmare. Extreme wealth concentration is incompatible with democracy because economic power always translates into political control. It’s time to regulate the billionaire class

Leonard Nimoy was more than a colleague—he was a friend, an ally, and my political soulmate. Leonard played a half-human, half-Vulcan officer—a being caught between two worlds. Yet in his own life, he was perhaps the most profoundly human person I have ever known.

It is dangerous. iirc the British Army stopped using them, I want to say in the early to mid 1980s, following a fatality. You'd think that the instructor would be very motivated to check that the firer had an empty chamber, but it's hard to get away from Murphy's law all the time...

Prisoners of war (POWs) are captured members of enemy armed forces in international armed conflicts and are protected under the Third Geneva Convention. They must be treated humanely, always. Learn more: ms.spr.ly/63329SlOzJ
Four things you need to know about prisoners of war (POWs) and the rules of war 1. For the most part, they are members of armed forces who have fallen into enemy hands. 2. Their status is only legally recognized in international armed conflicts. 3. They must have access to medical care, food, water, clean facilities, and, in general, safe living conditions. 4. The III Geneva Convention allows the ICRC to visit POWs, interview them confidentially, and check their treatment and conditions. But we cannot force our entry: access depends on States granting permission.

Yes, proper infrastructure would really help. I always try not to cycle on roads where I would drive; but it's not always possible to avoid cars, and cycling amongst them is a bit cringe, sadly

This week, the right basically gave up the territory on patriotism. From the mainstream right to the furthest extreme, it encouraged a foreign billionaire as he joked about invading the country and actively tried to undermine its democratic process.
