Earlier this week, I agreed to interviews with two USA Today journalists. They wrote fantastic articles about the Cornell case that I'm proud to have been a part of. What I did not know is that their employer considers interviews to proprietary and opens up recordings to be used by any journalist.

At barely 17, I did not know any of that. The first guy was close enough to see people being vaxxed. He just went straight down, bam. The second guy was behind him in a different line. Saw the first guy go down, moaned, & collapsed. People caught him. 40 years later I still remember this.

white men in action: I stopped at a local burger/fried things/halal place for fish & chips (they use whiting & it's delicious) & in the few minutes I was waiting for my order I saw two white guys being, well, dicks. guy #1: can I get the special? cashier (woman, probably late teens): which one?

years ago, when one of my closest friends got married, the wedding party spent the weekend at her father's house. we spent the day after the wedding making tomato sauce & pesto from her dad's abundant garden. we all went home with jars of the stuff. best wedding favors ever.

Usually the library only "shows" 1 copy until release day, even if they've ordered more. Like, with @wiswell.bsky.social's THE DRAGON HAS SOME COMPLAINTS, there was 1 copy & a long waitlist...until release date. Then there were 6 copies & a much shorter wait. I'm hoping for similar results here.

The "COVID is respiratory" message convinced me for months that I had not had it in March/April 2020 bc I had almost no respiratory symptoms. Weeks of fever, migraine, digestive issues. Sore throat for like 2 days, no cough or congestion.

One thing that sometimes helped, depending on the performer, was asking them to read passages containing less familiar words. But yes, generally an abundance of riches was an issue.

I have said, "well, what did he mean, then" a few times. I am also the person who makes people explain racist/sexist jokes: "why is that funny? I don't understand." And once drove a man off the subway by verbally protecting the visibly uncomfortable young woman he was hitting on.

I knew his wife a little and had met his mom once or twice at holiday events. The shiva was practically a party, his mom was that loved--as were my coworker & his wife. Huge family, many friends, joyous storytelling, tons of food. Same faith, different customs.

When the food was set out, it was made clear by elders present that it was for family only. So my daughter & I left. A few years after that I paid a shiva call on a coworker whose mother had died. The coworker & had were friendly enough that we socialized outside of work.

I moved out of the way, then headed for the door. The neighbor literally grabbed my arm & said, "stay and have dinner." I did, of course. A few years later I paid a shiva call on another woman whose parent had died. I knew the woman through our children but we were not friends.

Not long after I moved into my building, a neighbor's mother died. I knew the neighbor & her husband to say hi to but no more than that. Went to pay a shiva call anyway--I mean, they lived 2 doors away! As I was preparing to leave, a massive amount of food arrived.

I feel like "He didn't mean anything by it" has been the background noise of most of my adult life. I have almost never been a target but I've witnessed a lot of crappy behavior and done what I can to short-circuit it, both directly and indirectly, and ⬆️ might be the most common response.
