This is how private interests manufacture consent for policies that are NOT in our interest Private companies have extracted £90 billion in dividends since privatisation - and loaded them up with £72 billion in debt It is time for Andy Burnham to bring our water into public ownership!
Graphic that shows that the new report purporting to show that it would cost £105 billion to nationalise England's water was funded by Water UK, an organisation that represents private water companies.

It all stems, imo, from the fear of ‘not having enough’ + no sense of security coming from those we choose in elections that the country can & will provide enough & security. Technology is not a solution for these human centred issues.

It's not just the endless bill increases. It's not just that 1/3 of your bill goes to paying shareholder dividends and servicing debt. It's not just the 1/2 million sewage discharges in one year. It's the corrupt system, which rewards water bosses for failure, that people can't stand.

LET THEM GO BUST ! Last year, Thames Water took out a £3bn loan - at 9.75% interest. And now they want another £2.4bn to keep going?! ENOUGH. If water companies can't survive without rip-off loans, they should be declared insolvent and brought into public hands through special administration.
Screenshot from The Daily Telegraph, 2nd October 2026: "Thames Water seeks £2.4bn lifeline after rescue plan stalls Troubled utility risks more financial turmoil if its army of hedge fund backers do not provide emergency cash", above a graphic of the Thames Water logo swirling down a drain.

Universal Credit is a state subsidy for big corps avoiding paying a living wage while simultaneously making vast £Bn profits. Thats the scandal & the area needing a full review. When 2 parents in FT work cannot afford the basics, the system of effort reward & profits is out of kilter.

If the minimum wage gave employees sufficient income to cover their living costs the need for Universal Credit would reduce. But that would impact big business profits e.g Tesco making £Bn while UC supports their business model. The necessity for in work welfare is the scandal not PIP or Pensions.

What on earth is happening?
This had become the new normal. RNLI crew members had been forced to take their permits off their cars after their tyres have been repeatedly slashed. Most of them have been pilloried at the school gates or turned away from local pubs. One man who worked in search and rescue had been beaten unconscious and hospitalised, recognised for TV interviews he had done.
