I was on NPR talking about the decline of talking, and the hilarious part is that the "interview" was the reporter emailing me some questions and asking me to RECORD A VOICE MEMO to answer. At least the reporter recognized the irony here! www.youtube.com/shorts/qLEGQ...

I've always hated the "kids are sponges" metaphor. It tells parents/educators that kids are passive absorbers, emphasizing language & other input over the child's own talking, acting, and active learning. I finally wrote a Psych Today blog post about it. www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/the-...

The “Children Are Sponges” Idea Is Harmful to Kids
The idea that kids are like sponges is behind several harmful trends in parenting and education that encourage kids to be passive, blunting their learning and brain development.

I'm blogging on Psychology Today, and here is my first post! It addresses a core idea in my book, that talking is mental exercise, with effects way beyond communication. Wild to try to communicate this in a 700-word post! The Word Workout | Psychology Today www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/the-...

What's your dishtowel (DT) grammatical theory? Formalist: pristine DTs w strict DT-bar categories (hand v. dish use). Usage-based (me): well-worn DTs w wide scope. I once grabbed a DT to wipe up a messy spill in a Formalist kitchen & was judged ungrammatical: "Maryellen, we've got SPONGES for that!"
