If anyone complains to you about paying taxes, ask them what they think about Ontario privatizing alcohol sales. Previously you bought at the LCBO, and the profits (a tax) went to the government for services. Now, you pay the same amount for beer at 7/11 and those profits go to… 7/11.

@graphicmatt.com I wanted to draw your attention to GG30.23 - Occupational Health and Safety Report for 2025. As a paramedic, it is not surprising, but nonetheless staggering, how outsized the rate of injury is to other departments. We have over 3 times more LTIs than second place (shelter staff).

I’ve mentioned this before when thinking about geopolitical events, but it’s very helpful to, at least hypothetically, take them at “face value”. I’m seeing commentators talk, again, about Trump and his teams incompetence at negotiations. But what if they don’t *want* to succeed?

There’s nothing particularly exotic about historical materialism. Marx’s idea is that, just like the rest of nature, black holes, ecosystems etc., human civilization is governed by a set of laws that constrain its possible outcomes. Humans can influence these changes, but cannot transcend the laws.

This is also not even a little bit controversial, but very few popular commentators believe it. You might ask why so much online content refuses to acknowledge this. The best example is "Professor" Jiang, likely a CIA asset, who uses hypersonic Weed Logic to distract from the real causes of the war.

Assume two premises are true and try to figure out why the US attacked Iran. 1. The US fully understood the consequences of war with Iran 2. The US and Israel are the same entity (just like the US is a one party state with two parties).

So it seems pretty unrealistic that no one was doing sex stuff in the holodeck. But comparing TNG’s version of a future with actual AGI to our current AI world is a mindfuck. Some is the same, like research, but no one in TNG was like “let’s have the computers do everything so we can have no souls”

If the West cared at all about its citizens, instead of allowing the prices of everything to spiral out of control, they would put price caps on essentials like energy, food and housing to parry the most devastating economic impacts of their war crimes.

Obviously there is a tremendous amount of fog of war in the information space wrt Iran. That being said, something as huge as this is an excellent time to cull your sources as we get the facts. For example, consider removing people who didn’t predict a US war on Iran w the Ford and Lincoln there.

This might be a stretch, but hold my beer for a moment. An important Chinese delegation visits Venezuela hours before the attack. Maduro is captured in a theatrical display of "superiority". This wets the lips of the US. Rodriguez plays for time, and allows the US to move the Gerald Ford.

The most depressing part of living in Canada is just how cowardly people are here. This is a social feature of hyper-individualism, granted, and we shouldn’t run into a machine gun nest by ourselves just on principle, but for fuck’s sake at least stand up for yourself and your family?

A central tenet of Marxian economics, is that capitalism will continuously overtake other forms of production, making artisans and entrepreneurs (petty bourgeois) into wage workers. This is a story of just that, not from a Marxist, but a science YouTuber: www.youtube.com/watch?v=piHG...

We should be asking ourselves why the NFL organized this specific halftime show. When Christian settlers ventured into Northern Europe, they initially tried to destroy pagan religious traditions. But they realized it was far easier to co-opt them. Thus we have Christmas Trees.

Michael Parenti passed away today at 92. Without "Blackshirts and Reds" I would not be a communist. Parenti helped pave the way for me to connect with the historical struggle to emancipate humanity from the scourge of capitalism. It's without hyperbole to say that this saved my life.

Everyone has to remember that Carney was not talking to or about ordinary people at Davos. Carney was telling capitalists that if they have any hope of retaining their positions of privilege, they should pivot. He mimicked left-wing talking points to placate us, but it won’t work.

🇺🇸 U.S. Expands Extrajudicial Killings to Pacific Waters

The U.S. military launched two more strikes on alleged drug-carrying boats in the eastern Pacific, killing at least five people in 48 hours — the eighth and ninth such attacks since September. The operations mark a shift from the Caribbean to South American waters off Colombia and Ecuador.

Trump said he doesn’t “feel badly” about the killings because each destroyed boat “saves 25,000 American lives,” boasting of U.S. weapon accuracy and insisting the strikes are legal. “We have legal authority, right?” he asked, before answering himself: “We’re allowed to do that.”

He claimed “there are no more boats in the water,” including fishing vessels, and said future hits will target smugglers “on land.”

🎥 Videos released by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth show boats exploding mid-ocean in the eastern Pacific. Below, Donald Trump seated beside NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte addresses the strikes.Today, at the direction of President Trump, the Department of War carried out yet another lethal kinetic strike on a vessel operated by a Designated Terrorist Organization (DTO). Yet again, the now-deceased terrorists were engaged in narco-trafficking in the Eastern Pacific.

The vessel was known by our intelligence to be involved in illicit narcotics smuggling, was transiting along a known narco-trafficking route, and was carrying narcotics. Three male narco-terrorists were aboard the vessel during the strike, which was conducted in international waters. All three terrorists were killed and no U.S. forces were harmed in this strike.

These strikes will continue, day after day. These are not simply drug runners—these are narco-terrorists bringing death and destruction to our cities. These DTOs are the “Al Qaeda” of our hemisphere and will not escape justice. We will find them and kill them, until the threat to the American people is extinguished.

I was sort of happy the Jays won, and then Edward Rogers, the billionaire telecom monopolist, dragged his pale, flaccid corpse on stage to accept a trophy he played zero part in winning. It’s so depressing when these anemic corporate pirates come out of the woodwork after every big win. Fuck Rogers.

When people come at you with thoughts about how a "public service" should be profitable, there are a million responses. But the one I like the best, the metaphor that clinches the idea, is asking these people if they believe that making themselves dinner, or doing laundry, should be profitable.

I’m sure someone has said this, but I haven’t seen it, so here goes: all politics involves violence. The only necessary condition for a modern nation state is having a monopoly over “legitimate” violence. That is, creating and implementing laws enforced, at least partially, by coercion.

If you’re in Toronto, get out to Pearson to support the Air Canada wildcat strike. This is the most important labour action in years. Many of us often say that the tactics used in the imperial periphery will eventually come to the core. The typical example is the Nazis, who were preempted by the Freikorps. The US has used the tactic of funding violent, destructive and hateful fringe movements to destabilize the world since WW2.

The only reason workers like overtime is because they aren’t paid enough. Employers often tout having OT hours as a benefit for workers. In reality, OT is only valuable b/c of the calamitous fall of wages over the last 50 years. This wage decrease, through OT, has now undermined the 40 hr work week.

This isn’t new but, it’s clearly a problem that a lot of left media and intellectuals talk to each other endlessly about class and the labour movement, but rarely talk to actual workers. And it’s tough, because it leaves organizers in the position of having to try and connect these worlds.
