At this moment in time, removing bike lanes in Toronto by the province... is purely political and only personal. No more, no less. Nothing else matters. #bikeTO

Had a chat with CBC Metro Morning's Chris Glover about a newly opened section on The Meadoway. Greenways are an important part of the active transportation network in #ScarbTO, but we also need real good cycling infrastructure on arterial roads as well. www.cbc.ca/listen/live-... #bikeTO #walkTO

Agree, riding along Port Union Rd, is so pleasant now. It really serves as a showcase as what can be done well in our suburbs. I am tentatively planning a celebratory community ride later this year for Port Union Rd. Stay tuned. #bikeTO #ScarbTO

The current laws surrounding ebikes and other micromobility vehicles is really confusing. The mishmash of overlapping and conflicting legislation from all levels of government has created a politically charged public safety problem that needs to be solved… the sooner the better.

As a front-line public health worker, I have the privilege to talk to (literally) hundreds of cyclists in the GTA and it very obvious that the legal confusion has created significant public knowledge gaps for many, and especially those who are trying to make ends meet working as food delivery couriers.

With the goals of strengthening community action, providing access to trusted information, and to help increase knowledge and awareness within this vulnerable population, I helped organize a Safe Cycling Workshop in partnership with David Shellnut, Cycle Toronto, and the Bike Brigade.

Outreach efforts for this workshop, (the first of its kind in Scarborough), included widespread emails, social media posts, informal WhatsApp/text message groups, and most importantly, translating posters into four key languages, and postering key gathering areas on Danforth Ave and Kingston Rd. We also had free food delivery bags for attendees, and a team of Community Health Ambassadors who helped connect people to key health and well being services and supports.

The result? 50+ people attended the event and nearly all of them were new to our agency, and got connected to the growing cycling community in the east end. Most importantly we answered so many questions about personal safety and riding in the city.

Many thanks to our partners who helped make this happen. Let’s keep going. cc: David Shellnutt, Michael Longfield, The Bike Brigade, #bikeTO #scarbTO

Last weekend I led a Jane’s Bike Ride highlighting newly built and much needed active transportation connections in Scarborough Southwest and East York. My goal was to help shine a light on a citizen-led project to establish the West Scarborough Rail Trail.

Such a project would play a significant role in connecting a large section of Scarborough (i.e., tens of thousands) to the city’s expanding cycling network. Many thanks to all of the volunteers that helped make this day possible.

P.S.: Physical separation for the bike lanes on Eglinton Ave E. can’t come soon enough. #walkTO #bikeTO #ScarbTO #JanesWalk

In Ontario criminal vigilantism is acceptable, effective & can influence government policy. When Doug Ford gives his tacit approval of criminal vigilantism, indicating it can influence his government's public policy, it's a frightening moment for Ontario. My column on what we should think about.

Shawn Micallef: Doug Ford’s attack on speed cameras shows how good politics can make for lousy public policy
The premier’s comments on Tuesday should be a moment for Ontarians to think whether the province is a place of law and order or where vigilantes can influence government policy.
