Welsh poet RS Thomas died #OnThisDay in 2000. Here's a tribute by Rowan Williams (patron of the RS Thomas & ME Eldridge Society)…

Text of poem -

Deathship.
(In memory of R. S. Thomas)
The last years, words from a window smoothing the sea, the iron back and forth to probe the fugitive wrinkles carving a path down to the lost gate.
What hid in the pale clefts till now feels for the light, a soft uncertain lingering as if through stone, through furrows of flint.
The tides pressed neat as for an evening out: time to drag down a black boat from the shed, off through the gate, to balance on the slow sea at dark, ready to sail.
The smoke will rise, the cloudy pillar wavering across the sky's long page At dawn, somewhere westward, the boat flares in a blaze of crying birds.
- Rowan Williams

A black-and-white close-up portrait of an elderly RS Thomas with tousled white hair and a deeply lined face, wearing a dark coat. He is looking slightly off-camera with a happy expression.

I still find it hard to believe that Wal is no longer amongst us. I will be joining others on stage to celebrate the great man at Pontardawe Arts Centre on the 18th September.

Very sad to hear of the passing of Moyà Brennan. I had the privilege of opening for Clannad on their USA and UK tours in 1993. Moyà was so kind and encouraging to me at the time and we easily became good friends. We have lost one of the worlds greatest voices and a wonderful human soul xo

Last night I was at this extraordinary piece of theatrical magic. Michael Sheen and cast created moments that will remain with me. Thornton Wilder himself would surely have loved this interpretation of his opus. I was moved and challenged and the world has felt a little more tender today.

Wonderful to spend time with the genius that is Mr George Lowden and play some amazing guitars at his HQ. We’ve been great friends for a long time and I’m still using the guitar I bought from him in 1984 on this tour. The Belfast show was a cracker!

I’ll never forget last night. Michael Sheen reads Dylan Thomas and R.S. Thomas, while I respond in the gaps with songs that try to empathise with the haunting words of Wales’s beloved poets.. as recited by one of its greatest actors. Thanks to Michael for the depth of his creativity and kindness.

Home after a wonderful run of shows on West Coast USA and at the unique and beautiful Sisters Folk Festival. It’s good to be reminded of the best that is America and hopefully to have encouraged some of the faithful in their struggle against this current administration’s bewildering madness.
