AI "is a thieving, hallucinating, biased, data-scraping, ecо-destroying, surveillance bot that will never be able to reconcile the receipts of its unethical origins." —A Psalm for the Analog @melaniedusseau.bsky.social LOOMING: drive.proton.me/urls/JE8JPJR... www.law.georgetown.edu/privacy-tech...
One, we're never going to shut up about this. Two, this
isn't an "I told you so." Here's a simple fact that those making
an AI inevitability argument do not want to reckon: it's not too
late. Resistance thrives on chaos, and this brand of
unmonitored chaos has never met the friction and
revolutionary spirit of academic freedom-perhaps the very
thing that will cause us to collectively remember that generative
AI has no meaningful place in writing pedagogy, no ability to
be implemented with integrity, and isn't even passably slay at
writing.
It is a thieving, hallucinating, biased, data-scraping, ecоdestroying, surveillance bot that will never be able to reconcile
the receipts of its unethical origins. Not only are writing faculty
allowed to resist, we are now called to do so by our own morals
and steadfast, unabashedly idealistic belief in creative craft.
Make mine a pour over.

The idea that we have to "encourage responsible AI usage" is a core part of the inevitability narrative driving the institutional adoption that makes people think it's worth trying out. it contributes to the very problem it supposedly tries to solve. we can't let it go unchallenged.

Why even have a brain, any ideas, any ability to express them, any kind of communication with other people, any desire to solve problems or invent anything, any reason to learn, any use for your eyes or your heart, or any reason to teach or create
From NYT article about the increasing use of AI in the classroom: “Writing is one of the most challenging tasks for students, which is why it is so tempting for some to ask A.I. to do it for them. In turn, A.I. can be useful for teachers who would like to assign more writing, but are limited in their time to grade it.”
