🔥 The new “Gap Decorations” API allows us to add borders between grid rows/columns and Flexbox children. I spent some time playing around with it and it’s a lovely new feature. 😄 You can learn more on CSS Tricks:

Gap Decorations Are Now Available, Here’s What’s New | CSS-Tricks
Today, with CSS gap decorations fully supported in Chrome and Edge, starting with version 149, you can now very easily style gaps, and with a lot of control.

The mid-1980s Soviet Union was famously dubbed a "gerontocracy." Between 1982 and 1985, three successive General Secretaries—Brezhnev, Andropov, and Chernenko—died in rapid succession, their advanced age and failing health paralyzing the state apparatus. 🧵 1/3

While this is certainly good news, it’s perhaps good to put in perspective: European companies spend about 100 billion euros annually to reach European customers through Google and Meta. This is why we need European platforms. Also platforms with ads. So that we can stop forking over the margins

The world’s largest sand battery got through Finland’s harshest winter in years. 2,000 tonnes of sand, heated to 500-600°C by cheap power, feeding district heating in Pornainen. And it worked. Result from one install: oil down 100%, emissions down 70%. Industrial process heat is the real prize.

DOOM.css is getting somewhere. Gameplay is pretty much done completely in JavaScript, but the whole rendering is 100% CSS. This map is 768 div's with 3D transforms. Added a nice spectator view as well which is literally just adding a couple of CSS custom properties override for the rendering.

Ever wondered why text never aligns perfectly? You set padding to 24px. You check it in dev tools. But visually it looks like 32px. The reason is invisible space above and below every text element. CSS includes it by default because of how line-height works.

Euronews is publishing op-eds from 🇺🇸lobbyists & pretending they're news articles. It blasts "decoupling fantasies & grandstanding" from those wary of 🇺🇸, and praises VDL's 🇺🇸🇪🇺 surrender deal. It was written by "EU Tech Loop", the blog of a 🇺🇸 lobbying group. But it's labelled as a normal news article

Anthropic cut off xAI’s access to Ant models in Cursor
Kylie Robison C @kyliebytes
X.com
Scoop: xAl staff had been using Anthropic's models internally through Cursor-until
Anthropic cut off the startup's access this week.
Here's what xAl cofounder Tony Wu sent to staff on Wednesday according to a copy of the internal Slack message I viewed:
"Hi team, I believe many of you have already discovered that anthropic models are not responding on cursor. According to cursor this is a new policy anthropic is enforcing for all its major competitors.
This is a both bad and good news. We will get a hit on productivity, but it rly pushes us to develop our own coding product / models. We're at a time in which Al is now a critical technology for our own productivity. This coming year is rly going to be wildly exciting for all of us.The team is rapidly developing our own models / product. We will have something to share with everyone soon. In the meantime, you may still try all different kinds of models in grok build."
Anthropic declined to comment. A Cursor spokesperson directed me to Anthropic for comment. xAl did not respond to request for comment.

Changing World

UNCHANGING MAN

A CENTURY HENCE

It is fascinating to conjecture what life will be like a hundred years from now, but I feel pretty sure that the most extravagant guesses would, in one respect, fall short of the reality. Material progress will have reached a stage which no one can even imagine. While man himself will remain very much as he is today.
