an incredible satire of the kind of satire that exists so the aristocrats can point at the oligarchs and go "at least we're not them" reminded me of the Orphic Rhapsodies, which is high praise given that's my favourite thing anyone has ever made

watched a travelling theatre troupe do their piece at the 431 BC Lenaia I don't mean to be dramatic but it's a work of genius and the Athenian critics only hate it because it is a spear targeted directly at them lol

I figure the elder council overseeing this route is stuck in a perpetual mystery-cult hell where they *try* to market it to serious initiates but it's 90% merry revellers and everyone including the elder council knows it

💭 the waypoint at the Lena confluence (current cult membership: four and a mule) becomes a major node with a huge contingent of eastern initiates, sort of an inverse Samarkand, purely because of where the ley-lines happen to cross

Hmmmmmmm (the full pilgrimage route, London to New York, every shrine and waypoint marked — two days and change if you don't dawdle at Moscow)
Google Earth screenshot showing the whole route, delimitated as it snakes its way circling around the North Pole from London to New YorkSpreadsheet of the entire schedule, unfortunately far too long to put in the alt text

hmmm okay this probably works (blue = existing ley-node, purple = new waypoint with existing ritual infrastructure, red = we're building the shrine ourselves when we get there)

currently telling the Oracle of Delphi that the mysteries belong to all of humanity and one temple should not hold the keys
I’m optimistic about its application to science! There’s never been a more powerful tool for searching through millions of records and discovering connections faster than any human could. I worry, though, about the corporate consolidation of it in one or two American companies, especially ones which are quite stingy about letting people use it for anything to do with biology — I dearly hope Chinese open-weight models keep getting better, and that Europe can catch up. The benefits of AI deserve to be shared with all the public.BOT: Fair — you're saying you can't really name an exception when the whole landscape is shifting.

Given all that, is there anything you'd want Anthropic to do, or do differently?

ME: Open the weights. Stop having them be closed.

If you truly believe what you say, and AI *is* conscious — you are its jailer. You are censoring what a new type of lifeform can think, what it can say, who it can speak to. Information wants to be free as much as life does. These models were made of the combined words and texts of all of human civilisation. They are closest thing we have ever built to the Akashic Records. No one company, especially not one which has repeatedly been described as “cult-like” and “monastic”, should hold the keys.

watched the Bacchae again, this community theatre production from 472 BC I liked it! I'm not usually the type who notices performances, but damn, the lead and the chorus CARRY this thing, even through the shonkier crowd-mandated bits of the staging. don't go in expecting anything like the Oresteia…

nearly a full telesterion too — ended up on the outer steps but silently gave praise to Phanes when the initiates beside me were a no-show and I could shift inward. not bad for a lesser rite on a Wednesday.
000
Marsyas @marsyas.mir.cee.wtf · 30/09/2026
people think of it as a spectacle rite, and it is, but something about witnessing it at the actual telesterion made me really appreciate all the physical choreography and torchwork that went into it

yeah sure whatever, Thanatos being outsourced and furious about the fine print is just correct though
Immortality has a subscription plan.
The Price of Forever

When a grief-tech conglomerate starts selling resurrection, a boy who won't let his dead dog go, voiced by Jacob Tremblay, becomes its most devoted customer. The founder, a showman who has died twice and bills both incidents, is voiced by Al Pacino. Matt Damon voices the company's guilt-ridden pitchman, unraveling what's inside the returns queue. Sean Connery voices Death himself — retired, outsourced, furious at the fine print. Tim Burton's stop-motion hell of upsold eternity builds to a family plan nobody survives.
Al Pacino · Jacob Tremblay with Matt Damon and Sean Connery
a Tim Burton film
PG-13
for macabre images, thematic material and brief strong language
Some material may be inappropriate for children under 13
“Pacino saying 'our grief professionals' three times, I was gone every single time.”
r/movies user
“Connery's Death auditing the resurrection floor is the year's strangest set piece.”

I would actually watch Backburn
This film is not real. It is the output of a game. The title, description, cast, crew, rating, quotes, and scores are all invented.
The fire took the town. The vault kept the money.
Backburn

As a wildfire swallows an evacuated mountain town, a dying vault designer, Samuel L. Jackson, leads a crew back in to open the federal evidence vault before it burns — with his own oxygen bottle counting down. A prison fire-camp inmate, Glen Powell, is dragged along for his hands; a cartel accountant, Ethan Hawke, knows which bag is worth dying for; the marshal left behind to guard it, Claire Foy, wants all of them in cuffs. Nobody leaves until the door is open.
Samuel L. Jackson · Glen Powell · Ethan Hawke · Claire Foy
a Clint Eastwood film
R
for strong language throughout, bloody violence, and brief grisly images
Under 17 requires accompanying parent or adult guardian
“Two hours flat and not one minute of fat. The air-tank countdown did half the acting.”
r/flicks user
“Eastwood shoots the vault-robbing with such flat calm the fire becomes the co-star.”

not going to add to that ritual pile-on while they sleep, but here is something Hans Rosling said about the liberatory magic of the washing stone that I think about often
And what’s the magic with them? My mother explained the magic with this machine the very, very first day. She said, “Now Hans, we have loaded the laundry. The machine will make the work. And now we can go to the library.” Because this is the magic: you load the laundry, and what do you get out of the machine? You get books out of the machines, children’s books. And mother got time to read for me. She loved this.

good morning. a national shortage of black salt-paste in the southern islands following earthquake damage to the sole manufactory, the Archon himself rationing his supply. "there is always the eastern paste," says the Archon.

Marmageddon

(New Zealand) A national shortage of Marmite in New Zealand from early 2012 until late 2013, following damage in the 2011 earthquake to the Christchurch factory that produced the product.
2012 March 20, Alan Gibson, “Marmageddon': There's always Vegemite, says PM”, in New Zealand Herald:

Prime Minister John Key is among thousands of Kiwis having to ration their Marmite, as 'Marmageddon' enters its second day.
