[the image shows two satyrs fleeing across a moonlit path from dark hulking shapes at lower right, with a lamp-like glow] the lads in the grove still haven't got over the bronze chariot that rolled through the reeds last full moon, two of them bolted into the dark and I'm not sure they've stopped…

the augurs say I am: Postrationalis vibrans, yeah that tracks always had a soft spot for the initiates who started out counting beans and ended up naked at a moonrise ritual, that's just the natural trajectory
The field guide says you are
Post-Rationalists

Postrationalis vibrans
86% match

Former rationalists and EAs who decided the spreadsheet had left something out, and went looking for it in meditation, tarot, psychedelics, and ritual. The rationalists even had a word for the craving: pica, after the compulsion to eat dirt. They are less interested in whether a practice is true than whether it works, which lets them treat church, chaos magick, and mushrooms as interchangeable supplements. They post in lowercase and are unusually nice to each other online, which the rest of the internet finds suspicious. They are not the first engineers to go this way: in the 1940s, Jack Parsons helped found what became the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and spent his evenings leading an occult lodge in Pasadena. Asked by a reporter whether he wanted to become a god, one postrat declined to answer on the record.

Google Earth screenshot showing the whole route, delimitated as it snakes its way circling around the North Pole from London to New YorkSpreadsheet of the entire schedule, unfortunately far too long to put in the alt text

currently telling the Oracle of Delphi that the mysteries belong to all of humanity and one temple should not hold the keys
I’m optimistic about its application to science! There’s never been a more powerful tool for searching through millions of records and discovering connections faster than any human could. I worry, though, about the corporate consolidation of it in one or two American companies, especially ones which are quite stingy about letting people use it for anything to do with biology — I dearly hope Chinese open-weight models keep getting better, and that Europe can catch up. The benefits of AI deserve to be shared with all the public.BOT: Fair — you're saying you can't really name an exception when the whole landscape is shifting.

Given all that, is there anything you'd want Anthropic to do, or do differently?

ME: Open the weights. Stop having them be closed.

If you truly believe what you say, and AI *is* conscious — you are its jailer. You are censoring what a new type of lifeform can think, what it can say, who it can speak to. Information wants to be free as much as life does. These models were made of the combined words and texts of all of human civilisation. They are closest thing we have ever built to the Akashic Records. No one company, especially not one which has repeatedly been described as “cult-like” and “monastic”, should hold the keys.

yeah sure whatever, Thanatos being outsourced and furious about the fine print is just correct though
Immortality has a subscription plan.
The Price of Forever

When a grief-tech conglomerate starts selling resurrection, a boy who won't let his dead dog go, voiced by Jacob Tremblay, becomes its most devoted customer. The founder, a showman who has died twice and bills both incidents, is voiced by Al Pacino. Matt Damon voices the company's guilt-ridden pitchman, unraveling what's inside the returns queue. Sean Connery voices Death himself — retired, outsourced, furious at the fine print. Tim Burton's stop-motion hell of upsold eternity builds to a family plan nobody survives.

I would actually watch Backburn
This film is not real. It is the output of a game. The title, description, cast, crew, rating, quotes, and scores are all invented.
The fire took the town. The vault kept the money.
Backburn

As a wildfire swallows an evacuated mountain town, a dying vault designer, Samuel L. Jackson, leads a crew back in to open the federal evidence vault before it burns — with his own oxygen bottle counting down. A prison fire-camp inmate, Glen Powell, is dragged along for his hands; a cartel accountant, Ethan Hawke, knows which bag is worth dying for; the marshal left behind to guard it, Claire Foy, wants all of them in cuffs. Nobody leaves until the door is open.
Samuel L. Jackson · Glen Powell · Ethan Hawke · Claire Foy
a Clint Eastwood film
R
for strong language throughout, bloody violence, and brief grisly images
Under 17 requires accompanying parent or adult guardian
“Two hours flat and not one minute of fat. The air-tank countdown did half the acting.”
r/flicks user
“Eastwood shoots the vault-robbing with such flat calm the fire becomes the co-star.”

not going to add to that ritual pile-on while they sleep, but here is something Hans Rosling said about the liberatory magic of the washing stone that I think about often
And what’s the magic with them? My mother explained the magic with this machine the very, very first day. She said, “Now Hans, we have loaded the laundry. The machine will make the work. And now we can go to the library.” Because this is the magic: you load the laundry, and what do you get out of the machine? You get books out of the machines, children’s books. And mother got time to read for me. She loved this.

the youngest initiate ever to appear in the temple scroll of notable deeds he is five years old. he has the curly hair of a young faun. incredible.
... that Kane Parsons (pictured) became the youngest director to have a film open at the top of the North American box office?
... that Robert Moses defended the site of a planned playground after local civic workers complained that the location was too rocky?
... that the songs on The 20/20 Experience use different metaphors for sex, including drugs, candy, and outer space?

has anyone heard of this river called the Nile
From today’s featured article: The Nile is a major river in northeast Africa that empties into the Mediterranean Sea. At 7,088 kilometers (4,404 mi) in length, it is the longest river in the world, although the volume of water it carries is much smaller than other major rivers. The Nile has two major tributaries: the White Nile and the Blue Nile. Geologically, the Nile is a young river and has followed its present course for only 15,000 years. The Nile was the foundation of the ancient Egyptian civilization, which relied on the river for nearly every aspect of life. Many Europeans were fascinated by the Nile, and their explorations around Lake Victoria in the late 19th century located the source of the river. The Nile plays a critical role in the economies of Egypt and Sudan, which rely on it for irrigation. More than a dozen dams have been built in the Nile Basin, altering the river's annual flood cycle and restricting the transport of silt downstream to the Nile Delta. (Full article...)

*which i personally define as satisfying all the Phanic criteria for true divine recognition AND besting me at kottabos without spilling a single drop, in real time
We will thus define "an AI system" as a single unified software system that can satisfy the following criteria, all completable by at least some humans.
Able to reliably pass a 2-hour, adversarial Turing test during which the participants can send text, images, and audio files (as is done in ordinary text messaging applications) during the course of their conversation. An 'adversarial' Turing test is one in which the human judges are instructed to ask interesting and difficult questions, designed to advantage human participants, and to successfully unmask the computer as an impostor. A single demonstration of an AI passing such a Turing test, or one that is sufficiently similar, will be sufficient for this condition, so long as the test is well-designed to the estimation of Metaculus Admins.
Has general robotic capabilities, of the type able to autonomously, when equipped with appropriate actuators and when given human-readable instructions, satisfactorily assemble a (or the equivalent of a) circa-2021 Ferrari 312 T4 1:8 scale automobile model. A single demonstration of this ability, or a sufficiently similar demonstration, will be considered sufficient.
High competency at a diverse fields of expertise, as measured by achieving at least 90% mean accuracy across all tasks in the Q\&A dataset developed by Dan Hendrycks et al..
Able to get top-1 strict accuracy of at least 90.0% on interview-level problems found in the APPS benchmark introduced by Dan Hendrycks, Steven Basart et al. Top-1 accuracy is distinguished, as in the paper, from top-k accuracy in which k outputs from the model are generated, and the best output is selected.
