Legislative proposal: if the Democrats take Congress, they should criminalize executive branch rescissions, and give it a long statute of limitation so that OMB stops f'ing around. I guess the WH could still preemptively pardon, but that would push even deeper in constitutional crisis territory.

I've been running into something like this in my own domain. I can use Codex to develop a nice transfer function between 2 radars, find parameters / confidence intervals, but what I really want to know is why I need something like the derived solution in the 1st place: what's physically happening.

I know I’m supposed to mostly muse about drones & permafrost, but like everyone, I have been thinking a lot about AI lately. What strikes me most, & this is not an observation uniquely made by me, is the perversity with which we have invested our resources—what machines we’ve chosen to build and why

One of my high school English teachers memorably went off on the class w/ "you are acting like a bunch of know-nothing, anti-intellectual, anti-learning people like the rest of America". At the time I was mystified. Not so much now.

As someone who has toyed with N-S models, this is a crazy story; Quanta magazine reporting is much better than NYT's. Impressed by groundwork laid by Córdoba & Martínez-Zoroa; less impressed by the multimillion dollar burn of VC capital to get the end result (w/ or w/o skullduggery?).

Off topic endorsement: If you are in suburban MD and think the Sideshow Bob episodes of the Simpsons are the best, try and get a ticket to -Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder- at Olney Theater. Superbly acted and staged… can’t believe it isn’t totally sold out (but it wasn’t full last night).

NWS forecast site is showing as down for me. I used to use it as my default test site for internet connections as it seemed invariably fast and responsive. Hard for me to see it as anything than another sign or sliding into crapulence.

This is a substantial new additional (unfunded) administrative burden to proposers. For my very small organization, it will cost several thousand dollars per year and be one of our largest recurring admin expenses. (Few orgs will pay people for their time on this, so the expense will be invisible.)

I’ve been thinking about how bsky sees AI. 1) I see many of the smart people here object on moral or humanist grounds. 2) I see some people here also object on the grounds that AI “doesn’t work”. I sympathize with the first of these ideas, but think the second is super misguided.
