This is a super obvious point, but the fact that MLB playoffs are buried on streaming services/networks I don't have and don't want to sign up to is BS. MLB is valuing short term $ from rights revenue instead of lifetime fans it never creates because they can't watch the playoffs. Compare to NFL.

Legislative proposal: if the Democrats take Congress, they should criminalize executive branch rescissions, and give it a long statute of limitation so that OMB stops f'ing around. I guess the WH could still preemptively pardon, but that would push even deeper in constitutional crisis territory.

I've been running into something like this in my own domain. I can use Codex to develop a nice transfer function between 2 radars, find parameters / confidence intervals, but what I really want to know is why I need something like the derived solution in the 1st place: what's physically happening.

Ive heard a compelling argument that In effect it was subsidized by their ability to put starlink on launches and turn around and sell that. Without the need for starlink driven cadence and ride share, the real cost would be higher. Not sure this is true but it seems plausible.

I know I’m supposed to mostly muse about drones & permafrost, but like everyone, I have been thinking a lot about AI lately. What strikes me most, & this is not an observation uniquely made by me, is the perversity with which we have invested our resources—what machines we’ve chosen to build and why

One of my high school English teachers memorably went off on the class w/ "you are acting like a bunch of know-nothing, anti-intellectual, anti-learning people like the rest of America". At the time I was mystified. Not so much now.

As someone who has toyed with N-S models, this is a crazy story; Quanta magazine reporting is much better than NYT's. Impressed by groundwork laid by Córdoba & Martínez-Zoroa; less impressed by the multimillion dollar burn of VC capital to get the end result (w/ or w/o skullduggery?).

I like that the authors of this paper made it fun to read, and honestly think it makes the text clearer. I have a secret hope that as AI makes the scientific literature overall more vanilla that the human response will be to make writing more engaging in response.

Off topic endorsement: If you are in suburban MD and think the Sideshow Bob episodes of the Simpsons are the best, try and get a ticket to -Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder- at Olney Theater. Superbly acted and staged… can’t believe it isn’t totally sold out (but it wasn’t full last night).

How Much Lead Is In Vintage Dinnerware? Here's How To Tell
Lead wasn't regulated in dinnerware before the 1970s, so you may want to display your china rather than serving food on it. How to know if your dinnerware contains lead or heavy metals.

NWS forecast site is showing as down for me. I used to use it as my default test site for internet connections as it seemed invariably fast and responsive. Hard for me to see it as anything than another sign or sliding into crapulence.

I was somewhere there with you. My favorite moment was in the end of Mendelssohn 3rd, when the strings are drawing to a close, then they go suddenly slow and soft and the woodwinds come in and everything changes. Totally awesome. Thought the guest conductor rocked on that piece.

Beauty comes in many forms. Human, first and foremost, produce beauty (and ugliness, hopefully not in equal measure). Nature is also beautiful. (Aside: As a planetary scientist, even empty natural places are manifestly beautiful.) Probabilty and math are beautiful, too.

Regarding a distaste for AI: if this is you, I hope you still have enough curiosity to try to understand how it works under the hood. To me - there is weird beauty in it. If, to you, the downsides aren't worth it, I agree there is a case there (especially if it murders us all). But dig in first.
