Your occasional reminder that performative sneering at whole genres of fiction is not a sign of intelligence, nor is performative misery a sign of superior talent. Read what brings you joy. No-one else gets to decide or to control what that means to you.

Professional wordsmiths at the BBC are mixing up their modal auxiliary verbs, accidentally positioning Reform as a government in waiting. The use of 'will' signals the future tense carrying implied certainty, rather than the hypothetical scenario suggested by 'would.' www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Reform says it will prioritise British-born young workers for social housing
Labour called the plan "unserious and unworkable" and accused Reform of pushing "gimmicks and division".

I rarely dump on a book: life's too short. But.."the uneven pacing, the unlikely coincidences and cliches that destroyed my sense of disbelief and most of all the horrendous winding-up-the-plot dump at the end that even basic crime novels avoid, this was not for me, much as I wanted to like it."

We tried to be light-hearted and fun, then we realised that most of our favourite reads over the last year haven't been! Nevertheless, might be of interest. www.sffworld.com/2026/08/summ...

Afternoon, @runalongwomble.bsky.social - hope you're well. Today I am reading The Infinite State by Richard Swan. Great cover, which sums the book up well so far: it is VERY Blade Runner-like. (But that's a good thing, in my opinion.)

Have just been told, in an immensely flattering post, that I have been a staff member at sffworld.com for 25 years today. Didn't realise, and I know that I have actually been there longer-for some reason I had to sign up twice. But still, if my laptop could blush, it would. And then I go - 25 years!

You know what? People who don’t like kissing don’t have to watch romances. Sober realists aren’t forced to sit through SFF. Grouches can eschew comedy and squeamish people are welcome not to watch horror films. Just let things exist for their target audience.

I have been reading the second Asimov autobiography. The Good Doctor is far from perfect, but he admits to many of his faults, even if it is a product of its age. Of course, being an autobiography it may not be the whole tale: Astounding by Alec Nevala-Lee tells a slightly different version, sadly.
