Very sad to hear about the death of Malcolm Edwards (the UK editor for Neuromancer and Empire of the Sun, among many other things). I did not know him well, but his delightful wit and integrity as a human being was immediately clear when we did speak. He will be sincerely missed. RIP.

Well this is three shades of awesome. Pop culture behemoth CBR just dropped their top 5 list of 'essential' cyberpunk books. Four are much as you'd expect (Do Androids Dream, Neuromancer, Snow Crash, and Altered Carbon), & one you wouldn't. My debut, 36 Streets. www.cbr.com/must-read-cy...

Remember, folks: for every author you see on here describing how they’ve filled out forms to get *some* compensation from the Anthropic AI case there are dozens, hundreds, hell THOUSANDS of us who get 0 because our books weren’t registered with the US copyright office yet have UK copyright!

We should treat genAI in publishing the way you’d treat a vampire trying to enter your home. You never give it permission to enter. It doesn’t matter if it‘s polite or makes generous offers or it’s *only* going to take the ones *you* don’t care about. It’s here for your blood. Don’t let it in.

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

Picked up Stormblood & Blindspace by @jeremyszal.bsky.social at my local bookstore yesterday! Didn't realize they were signed until a free bookmark fell out of the front pages. It reads like a Halo/Mass Effect story (my faves!) though the food depictions remind me of Ghibli 🍜. 10/10 would recommend.

I am fascinated by these anon fanfic writers who swoop in, bang out fics of niche video games/manga with gorgeous prose on the level of Cormac McCarthy, then disappear for 3 months till they've moved onto posting masterpieces for the next niche IP. I admire their work ethic, truly.

"Your brains stop developing at age 25" was a press misrepresentation of a study. They wanted to see if brains continued to develop after adolescence, so the study was capped at age 25. A later study with a wider subject pool showed that brains are ALWAYS developing our whole lives.

For reasons I don't want to go into yet: it's been an incredibly difficult time for me right now, for many reasons. But a number of friends in the community are helping me through it. I won't embarrass them by naming them. But you know who you are, and my gratitude is eternal.

Stayed up LATE finishing @jeremyszal.bsky.social's Wolfskin last night/this morning. The Common trilogy is a great dive if you've been wistful about a Space Opera like Mass Effect and/or really identify with introverted MCs who must rely on friends/family to drag them into living life.

Chengdu Worldcon was by far the best event, best WorldCon, I have ever attended. The Chinese organisers, fans and writers carried mountains on their shoulders. It is a gross injustice that McCarty and co's actions have overshadowed that in the public eye. So this decision is very, very welcome.

I've seen a lot of "advice to writers on how to counter accusations of AI." Let me remind you: the onus is on the accuser to prove the accusation. Most accusers aren't detecting AI. They're detecting the source material used to train AI. Our voices were stolen. Do not fall into this trap.
