Mark Yon @markyon.bsky.social · 02/10/2026A welcome rerelease in hardback: Giger's Alien, his diary, written during the making of the first film, reviewed: www.sffworld.com/2026/10/gige... 000
Mark Yon @markyon.bsky.social · 30/09/2026Very pleased we got this one sorted today: new Malazan covers, I believe exclusively revealed at sffworld.com. The remaining five will be revealed next week. www.sffworld.com/2026/09/sffw... 132
Mark Yon @markyon.bsky.social · 27/09/2026Afternoon, Womble! Hope you're feeling better soon. Here I am currently reading for review All Hallows Eve, a collection by Ellen Datlow, and breaking up the stories there with a read of The Exorcist by William Peter Blatty. Never read it but love the film! (Can you tell - Halloween soon!) :) 051
Mark Yon @markyon.bsky.social · 20/09/2026Morning, Womble: hope you're good! Today am rereading Station Eleven by Emily St. John Mandel; also weirdly have a hankering for reading about Romans, so am mixing it up with a non-fiction book about Romans from the Oxford University History of England series. A lovely Folio Society copy. Intense! 0151
Mark Yon @markyon.bsky.social · 19/09/2026My review of this amazing book is heartfelt. For anyone who loves those old Hammer movies, this book is a joy: www.sffworld.com/2026/09/the-... 100
Mark Yon @markyon.bsky.social · 14/09/2026My review of Massif by Garth Nix went live today. Erm... it's OK, but I had issues. www.sffworld.com/2026/09/mass... 000
Mark Yon @markyon.bsky.social · 06/09/2026Afternoon, Womble! Hope you're good. Here I am still dipping in and out of The Rouse by China Mieville, which frustrates so I put it down, but then drags me back in again! Also reading Massif by Garth Nix, which is more straightforward SF that makes me think of Adrian Tchaikovsky. Some nice ideas. 161
Mark Yon @markyon.bsky.social · 05/09/2026Very pleased to have been involved in setting this up for SFFWorld - an exclusive extract from Josh Malerman's soon-to-be-published latest novel: www.sffworld.com/2026/09/sffw... 000
Mark Yon @markyon.bsky.social · 05/09/2026Rumours that "The Batman II" movie has gone 'back to basics' are hopefully unfounded. 😃 000
Mark Yon @markyon.bsky.social · 03/09/2026Thought I would read and review a classic Robert Silverberg for a change. www.sffworld.com/2026/09/sffw... 020
Mark Yon @markyon.bsky.social · 30/08/2026Morning Womble! Hope you're OK. Here I'm reading The Warm Hands of Ghosts by Katherine Arden. The first 40% reads like a WW! historical novel, but now things are starting to be weird... 041
Mark Yon @markyon.bsky.social · 29/08/2026Really enjoyable "Ghost in the Shell" type book reviewed today: www.sffworld.com/2026/08/scio... 131
Mark Yon @markyon.bsky.social · 16/08/2026Review from our newest reviewer at @sffworld.com - it's a LitRPG book of enormous size: but is any good? www.sffworld.com/2026/08/he-w... 010
Mark Yon @markyon.bsky.social · 15/08/2026Horror Fans: Chapter 1 of Chuck Wendig's new book (out next week!) is here to read. www.sffworld.com/2026/08/excl... 020
Mark Yon @markyon.bsky.social · 11/08/2026I rarely dump on a book: life's too short. But.."the uneven pacing, the unlikely coincidences and cliches that destroyed my sense of disbelief and most of all the horrendous winding-up-the-plot dump at the end that even basic crime novels avoid, this was not for me, much as I wanted to like it." 010
Mark Yon @markyon.bsky.social · 07/08/2026Absolutely not complaining, but today's arrivals for possible review. Those two volumes of China Mieville's are one book. If I don't sleep for a month, I might just make publication day.... 030
Mark Yon @markyon.bsky.social · 06/08/2026After reviewing his latest book (The Infinite State) earlier in the week, I am very pleased that my interview with Richard Swan is now available @sffworld.com www.sffworld.com/2026/08/excl... 010
Mark Yon @markyon.bsky.social · 03/08/2026As we were asked, "Why haven't you done one?" I've put together a list of possible genre reads for the Summer. We tried to be light-hearted and fun, then we realised that most of our favourite reads over the last year haven't been! Nevertheless, might be of interest. www.sffworld.com/2026/08/summ... 010
Mark Yon @markyon.bsky.social · 01/08/2026My review of Richard Swan's The Infinite State is up: www.sffworld.com/2026/08/the-... A much better cover (in my opinion) than the US version that seems true to the book. 021
Mark Yon @markyon.bsky.social · 24/07/2026These exclusive extracts seem to be popular, so here's the latest at SFFWorld: Emily Rath's Devour Me: www.sffworld.com/2026/07/sffw... 000
Mark Yon @markyon.bsky.social · 19/07/2026Afternoon, @runalongwomble.bsky.social - hope you're well. Today I am reading The Infinite State by Richard Swan. Great cover, which sums the book up well so far: it is VERY Blade Runner-like. (But that's a good thing, in my opinion.) 271
Mark Yon @markyon.bsky.social · 11/07/2026I was rather hoping that this would be a book for my Book Group to read; they are all mainly crime/thriller readers. It sounds ideal, but I was a little disappointed with it. www.sffworld.com/.../time-to-... 010
Mark Yon @markyon.bsky.social · 05/07/2026Afternoon, Womble! Hope you're good! Work has really sucked up time this week but I finished Time To Burn by Ellery Lloyd, which was good but didn't finish as strongly as I had hoped, sadly. Now onto Weavingshaw by Heba Al Wasity. Slow start, but think it will improve. Very good debut novel though. 031
Mark Yon @markyon.bsky.social · 28/06/2026Morning, Womble! Hope you're good. I am currently not reading a lot of fiction at the moment, but I am enjoying making slow progress with Time to Burn by Ellery Lloyd. Early days yet, but this time travelling murder mystery might be as good as my Connie Willis' favourites..... 091
Mark Yon @markyon.bsky.social · 27/06/2026I'm a huge fan of Mike Carey's broad range of work and so I'm pleased to say that his latest, a Brothers Grimm-type folk-fantasy, didn't disappoint. Review: www.sffworld.com/2026/06/the-... 073
Mark Yon @markyon.bsky.social · 20/06/2026Bit of a more personal review, this one. I read the second volume of Isaac Asimov's autobiography. Lots of details that made me read more than I was going to: and some issues, too! www.sffworld.com/2026/06/in-j... 111
Mark Yon @markyon.bsky.social · 13/06/2026Review: Solid middle-book-of-a-trilogy that harkens back to the Young Adult SF I read when younger. www.sffworld.com/2026/06/the-... 011
Mark Yon @markyon.bsky.social · 07/06/2026So here's an unexpected surprise today. Quoted on the back of the next Peter F Hamilton book, Exodus: The Helium Sea. Wasn't expecting that, but nice all the same. And the new book is a monster! 010
Mark Yon @markyon.bsky.social · 06/06/2026Here's one of those books that I struggled to put down. Wasn't meant to read it for a while (back in March) but then did! Now due out in the UK. www.sffworld.com/2026/06/the-... 000
Mark Yon @markyon.bsky.social · 31/05/2026I was talking recently about The Stars My Destination by Alfred Bester. Very surprised and very pleased to find that one of my SF writing heroes - Joe Haldeman (The Forever War) - has made a comment about Bester and the book at the end of my review. www.sffworld.com/.../the-star... Made my day. 000
Mark Yon @markyon.bsky.social · 29/05/2026Latest review was a difficult one to write; I really wanted to like it, but elements kept taking me out of it. Others have done similar things better, I think. www.sffworld.com/2026/05/none... 011
Mark Yon @markyon.bsky.social · 26/05/2026I have been reading the second Asimov autobiography. The Good Doctor is far from perfect, but he admits to many of his faults, even if it is a product of its age. Of course, being an autobiography it may not be the whole tale: Astounding by Alec Nevala-Lee tells a slightly different version, sadly. 101
Mark Yon @markyon.bsky.social · 23/05/2026Read and reviewed a YA Asimov book being released for the first time in decades. Did it hold up? www.sffworld.com/2026/05/davi... 010
Mark Yon @markyon.bsky.social · 16/05/2026This is one of my books of the year, so far. Made me think lots after I'd read and reviewed it. www.sffworld.com/2026/05/pala... 000
Mark Yon @markyon.bsky.social · 14/05/2026Latest review at @sffworld.com An SF novel that's "a solidly entertaining read that focuses more on characterisation than concepts." www.sffworld.com/2026/05/seek... 010
Mark Yon @markyon.bsky.social · 10/05/2026Morning, Womble! Hope you're good too. Here I'm into literary territory (Is it spec-fic? Isn't it spec-fic?) by starting Nonesuch by Francis Spufford. 1940's wartime London, intriguing main character, possible slipsteam element. Good so far! 0142
Mark Yon @markyon.bsky.social · 08/05/2026Review at sffworld.com. I liked this one - steampunky occult detective story. Think this one has potential - Looking forward to the next one, already written! www.sffworld.com/2026/05/mort... 022
Mark Yon @markyon.bsky.social · 02/05/2026Review at @sffworld.com What can go wrong with 'samurai in space'? www.sffworld.com/2026/05/the-... 051
Mark Yon @markyon.bsky.social · 25/04/2026One I liked, up to the ending. For the Artemis II watchers, though. www.sffworld.com/2026/04/mars... 011
Mark Yon @markyon.bsky.social · 23/04/2026Interview with Jeremy Szal over @sffworld.com Really enjoyed doing this one! Thanks to @jeremyszal.bsky.social . www.sffworld.com/2026/04/sffw... 131
Mark Yon @markyon.bsky.social · 18/04/2026So: what do holy relics, Neanderthals, UFO researchers and secret societies all have in common? (Latest review for www.sffworld.com ) 000
Mark Yon @markyon.bsky.social · 17/04/2026Friday is a day when a lot of review books arrive. Here's today's pile. (Thanks to all who sent!) Are there any anybody's keen to read? 000
Mark Yon @markyon.bsky.social · 21/03/2026A lengthier review than normal over at SFFWorld, I think - because it was a book that didn't entirely work for me, and I wanted to try and explain why. www.sffworld.com/2026/03/no-m... 001
Mark Yon @markyon.bsky.social · 08/03/2026Morning Womble! Hope you're good. I have just finished reading a book I wasn't planning to read, but it sucked me in. It's not out until June! The Traveler (ugh: US spelling!) by Joseph Eckert. Great start with some twists along the way, and reminded very much of Richard Matheson's Shrinking Man. 071
Mark Yon @markyon.bsky.social · 07/03/2026Review of Jitterbug by Gareth L Powell up at @sffworld.com www.sffworld.com/2026/03/jitt... 173
Mark Yon @markyon.bsky.social · 13/02/2026Review @sffworld.com "...a story filled with charm and humour, memorable characters, pastries and cats, a huge great hug in a book that at the end leaves you with a great big smile. And for that reason, recommended. " www.sffworld.com/2026/02/agne... 010
Mark Yon @markyon.bsky.social · 24/01/2026Review of Nine Goblins out today at @sffworld.com Nice little novella with an interesting background story. 000
Mark Yon @markyon.bsky.social · 09/01/2026First review of the year @SFFWorld. A gripping new Asian-inspired Fantasy, I described it as "A Game of Thrones with dragons!" Complex, and not what you entirely expect. There are trigger warnings that are entirely justified. www.sffworld.com/2026/01/the-... 011
Mark Yon @markyon.bsky.social · 04/01/2026Morning Womble! I am rereading Gardens of the Moon by Steven Erikson, because I have forgotten SO MUCH (it has been 25 years, to be honest!) Am determined to finish the series this year, but can't remember any of it atm. But it is SO good - had forgotten how good, complex and bloody clever it is. 061
