He literally set off a bomb in a UK street. If this had been the IRA Pierce would calling for them to be hung, drawn and quartered. This is domestic terrorism pure and simple. A bomb set off to terrorise with the aim of getting a government to change its policy. Literally a textbook definition.

Yes. That piece was just stating the argument Burnham should use to sell it to his own party. It's not an argument I would use. Here is my conclusion from the piece.
What the commission should take from this

The tempting thing, for a Labour government with a Reform problem, would be to design a system around the opponent. Pick the district sizes, fiddle the thresholds, and hope. It would backfire at today's numbers, it would look like exactly the kind of stitch-up that feeds the people it was meant to stop, and most importantly it would be wrong in principle.

I think the right answer is to build a system that's fair to everyone, including the people I'd most like to see lose, and let the voters do the rest. They've shown in by-election after by-election that they know how to stop a party they don't want. Under PR they'd still be able to.

Literally just learned this now at Bristol's MShed museum. This must be what the nursery rhyme Pop Goes the Weasel is about.
'We had 500 to 600 customers on a Monday... and it was always the women who came. They brought in their husbands' suits, shoes and wedding rings and on that they raised enough money to see them through the week.'

Jesse White, a worker at John Swaish's pawnbroker's shop in the 1900s

The pawnbroker

The number of pawnshops in Bristol has varied across time, responding to social need. A hundred years ago people could 'pop the weasel' (pawn their weasel and stoat/coat) in over 50 pawnshops. They got a cash loan on their belongings, and could buy them back (with interest) on payday. It was a form of credit open to all, and a vital service in times of unemployment and recession with no Social Security. By the 1960s most had closed down but the number is rising again.

Raselle's pawnbroker's shop, Stapleton Road, 2010

Bristol's oldest pawnbroker opened in Old Market in 1796, and was taken over by Amos Raselle in 1894.

Exactly as I predicted Jukes and Orr have been thrown under the bus. The problem Farage has is that everyone who watches the film that caused Reform to abandon them will also see Farage himself clearly accepting foreign money. If Jukes and Orr have to go why can Farage stay? That makes no sense.
Reform UK says two senior officials have stepped down as the party launched an investigation into claims about funding aired during a Channel 4 News report.

Nigel Farage's senior aide Dan Jukes and Reform's head of policy James Orr have both stood down pending the outcome of the internal probe, the party said.

A Reform UK spokesman said: "The party believes it is important that the investigation is allowed to proceed independently and without prejudice.

"No further comment will be made while the investigation is ongoing."

Great from @chrisdillow.bsky.social today. Absolutely on fire regarding how politicians are so craven to a deeply unrepresentative media. I particularly like the "a few billionaires' gimps writing for a handful of cranks" framing. Spot on. chrisdillow.substack.com/p/the-politi...
It also requires them to recognise that the mass media is not only the enemy of decency and rationality but also a terrible guide to reality and public opinion, because it no longer aims at a mass market but is instead a few billionaires' gimps writing for a handful of cranks. Kowtowing to the press is turning back time to when it mattered. What we need instead today

This is spot on from @iandunt.bsky.social as to the limits of Farage trying to play Trumpian games with the British electorate. We're simply not culturally primed for it in the UK in the way the US has been over many decades.
I don't think this is Farage's fault. He is really very effective as a political communicator. I think the reason he struggles is because Brits are not religion, and therefore lack a pattern of behaviour in which we relinquish our minds to a spiritual leader. The whole muscle-memory of evangelism, from pulpit bashers to TV preachers, means nothing to us. We do not have a pattern of historic racial politics which slots political debates into a pre-existing us-vs-them narrative.
