Carreg Y Bwci: This is a weird one. About seven kilometres from Lampeter, on a saddle in the hills and right by the road sits this giant sunken doughnut of a mound with a massive slab, four or five metres long, lying across its south-west side with a cluster of smaller boulders beside it.

The Great Fire of Newcastle and Gateshead began on this day 1854, leading to 53 deaths and hundreds injured. At least 800 homes and businesses were lost. Caused by explosion at worsted yarn factory owned by Wilson and Sons in Hillgate, Gateshead. (Pic: Illustrated London News.)

England is a made up thing. It has no basis in the ineluctable laws of nature. Its extent is defined by Edward II getting his arse handed to him. Athelstan conquering York. The Welsh of Cumbria were incorporated, the Welsh of Gwynedd were not. It is a political idea, an aspiration - not taxonomy.

The Facial Expressions of Tethys by artist Julius von Bismarck. A suspended high-sea buoy that moves in real time. Sensors on a twin buoy out in the Atlantic Ocean send live satellite data to motors inside the museum. This makes the indoor buoy copy the exact, real-time movements of the ocean waves.

Great picture - we saw one at Fowlshaw Moss on Sunday afternoon. Too quick to attempt a photo, but it was great to see it ranging over the moss for a few minutes before diving to its prey.
