The new (slightly revised) Red List of European Moths has been published by the EU. A summary and links to downloads can be found on our website. Moths play a vital role in ecosystems and there is also an important new document on how to plan for their conservation www.bc-europe.eu/webpage.php?...

Two leaf mines on clover from yesterday in Long Melford, Suffolk. 1. The moth Parectopa ononidis (Clover Stilt). 2. The fly Agromyza nana. Lots of black frass in the latter.

Hi Sarah. It does look like Cosmopterix pulchrimella - are you able to get another photo please (right way up/top-shot). It would be new for VC32 if confirmed and a better view wouldn’t hurt.

Amber LED street lights could save millions of insects. New research shows 1800K amber LEDs cut insect attraction by ~40% compared to standard white LEDs, emitting almost no blue light. The study tracked 71,000 bugs across 6 German railway stations. #LightPollution #Insects #Wildlife #DarkSkies

I had a few thoughts on the results of last years Dotterel survey that I was going to make but then realised the one glaring omission, when are Dotterel predicted to be extinct as a breeding bird in Scotland? Below line of best fit through the last four surveys - answer around 2030, in four years!

Some years ago (1993-94) I was lucky enough to spend 2 summers surveying Dotterel in the Scottish Highland (pic under licence, tent in distance!), special birds, females can lay >1 clutch for diff males (polyandry), males provide all parental care. Sad to think of mountain plateaux without them:-(

Really hoping this turns out to be Coleophora wockeella. This is in France though. Don’t think it’s been recorded in the UK for a while. Another new species to me.

Only the third all-time VC32 record Sarah. First was a poorly documented report from 1902! Then we had one in Oundle on the night of 21st June. I’m assuming both of these recent records are of migrant individuals.

Used to be considered fairly uncommon here in Northants/VC32. More frequent nowadays, but still a very good record for the garden.

Great that you chaps still have “in-person/on-site” meetings. Moth conference is all on-line these days. Really miss the social aspect. Zoom just doesn’t cut it I’m afraid.

Colour-coded tape around the lid area too, so as not to mix them up with your buddy’s pots. And a coat of clear varnish on the outside. I’m still using card pots treated like this owned by B. A. Adams, who recorded moths in VC32 in the 1950’s. Inherited from the late John Ward.
