This is where de Camp muddied the waters, culling Conan for himself. And positioning himself as an advocate even if he never officially was, when the advocate was calling REH “maladjusted to the point of psychosis” it gave tacit permission for other wags like Maltzberg to dunk on Howard in print.

Agreed, and my issue with that was, he never read or heard a stray opinion about REH that he didn’t add to his arsenal. It was only in the 1970s when fans started really pushing back did he back off of some of his harsher criticisms, like the Oedipal complex junk.
