This whole “Choosin’ Texas” thing is really amusing. I actually listen to radio in the car. I have three pop hit stations on my favs and I have never heard of this song. Either none of them play it or it’s so bad I consistently change the station without knowing what it is. Is that a bubble? Maybe.

CAPTAIN MADISON lifts himself up and wanders to a view screen. He flicks the screen on and a squints at the bizarrely fresh and mildly pleased face of LT. GRABES.
CAPTAIN MADISON
What the hell’s going on GRABES?
LT. GRABES
We’ve spotted an enemy vessel, Sir. It appears to be disabled.
CAPTAIN MADISON
I’m on my way.

EXT. DEEP SPACE
The Stalwart approaches a drifting Bird of Prey. Sparks softly vent from a hole in its midsection.
INT. STALWART BRIDGE
The turbolift doors open and CAPTAIN MADISON and LT. COMMANDER JORDAN step out. They take their positions as the night shift vacates.
CAPTAIN MADISON
Status report, Mr. Grabes.
LT. GRABES
The Romulan vessel is damaged and adrift, Captain. It’s engineering section is exposed to space. Several heat signs aboard indicate survivors. Readings show they have enough battery power for minimal life-support.

CAPTAIN MADISON (MUTTERING TO HIMSELF)
We’ve never seen a Romulan ship this close up that wasn’t firing on us or blowing itself up. (ALOUD TO JORDAN) You’re thoughts, Commander?
LT. COMMANDER JORDAN turns to face CAPTAIN MADISON.
LT. COMMANDER JORDAN
Could be a trap, sir. In four years of war no Earth vessel has ever experienced a situation like this.
CAPTAIN MADISON clasps his hands and rests his chin on them. He looks intently at the view screen.
CAPTAIN MADISON
Without warp drive a sneak attack would be impossible. We’d see them coming a light year away.

LT. COMMANDER JORDAN
It could be a suicide mission. Wait for us to get close and then self-destruct taking us with them.
LT. GRABES
That’s definitely a possibility, sir. But they would require one hell of a power build up on very short notice. Their fusion reactors are cold.
LT. COMMANDER JORDAN
(TO GRABES SMILING) If that’s the case then we have ourselves a real prize! (TO MADISON) A Romulan ship with real Romulans on board. Even dead we’d finally get a look at them face to face.
CAPTAIN MADISON stares at the view screen even more intently. His eyes squint in deep thought. We see the Romulan ship grow larger in the viewer, her damage becoming more apparent.

We both feel that way. One thing touchscreens taught us is that they lack muscle memory and digging through menus to get to important features takes time and attention. That's why cameras and car dashboards are reverting to physical controls. And video games and real spaceships never adopted them.

Human Best Friend may be a divisive episode (not to us, we both loved it) but there’s nothing controversial about how fabulous Uhura’s outfit is in it.

I’m probably going to repair my broken iPad screen myself rather than get a new tablet. I think I can melt the glue with my fdm printer’s hotbed. Apple’s markups are insane now. Adjusting for inflation the same model with the same storage costs $300 more than it did in 2021. That’s just pure greed.

The Stalwart fires two rocket propelled torpedoes, the right one a single beat after the left. The first one detonates behind the Romulan vessel sending it into a slow spin. The second impacts directly, blowing the ship in two.
INT. STALWART - BRIDGE
From the captain’s chair we see the helm and main viewer. The Romulan ship’s remains explode into dust on screen. LT. GRABES turns toward the camera with a look of excitement.
LT. GRABES
Direct hit, sir! Target destroyed.
The ship’s first officer and helmsman, LT. COMMANDER LANDON JORDAN, turns toward LT. GRABES.
LT. COMMANDER JORDAN
Fourth one this week, GRABES. Nice job.
CAPTAIN MADISON remains unmoved by the situation.

EXT. DEEP SPACE - STALWART FLYBY
INT. STALWART - MESS ROOM
We pan across several tables in a not quite sanitary looking cafeteria. The tables are full of crewmen and women eating and talking. The camera stops at the back where the officer’s table is. LT GRABES, LT COMMANDER JORDAN, and ENGINEER STILES sit together talking in muted, shameful voices.
ENGINEER STILES
Listen, if it wasn’t for you guys on the bridge pulling more than your own weight we’d all be dead by now.
LT. GRABES looks down disheartened into a metal cup she’s holding in both hands.
LT. GRABES
It’s true, Captain Madison has been a little out of it lately.
ENGINEER STILES smacks his hand forcefully against the table and yells the loudest whisper he can.
ENGINEER STILES
A little?! He has to be badgered and prodded into any kind of decision making whenever one of those buzzard ships come into sight. He freezes!

LT. COMMANDER JORDAN
It’s not so much freezing. It’s more like... disinterest.
ENGINEER STILES
Whatever it is he’s going to get us all killed one day. We’ve got to do something.
LT. COMMANDER JORDAN
We’re all tired, Stiles. Several years of combat takes its toll on the best of us. We’ve both known Madison a long time now, and we have to trust he’s capable of pulling himself out of this kind of battle fatigue.
ENGINEER STILES
I’m just saying I know how my engineering crew feels. They’re worrying Madison is loosing his grip, and possibly even becoming a Romulan sympathizer. We have enough of those peacenik traitors back home. We don’t need one leading us into battle. If you were to challenge his actions I know the crew would...
An off screen crewman yells out something over the crowd’s noise.
CREWMAN
Captain on deck!

The camera slides over a room full of crewmen once relaxed and eating now standing at attention. It stops at the doorway with the figure of CAPTAIN MADISON standing in it. He steps forward and the door closes shut behind him.
CAPTAIN MADISON
As you were.
The crew sit and resume their chatter. Madison walks over to the officer’s table and sits down at the end, several seats away from the three conspiring officers already seated there. He addresses each one as he sits.
CAPTAIN MADISON
First Officer, Navigator, Engineer.
All three nod and respond with a muted “Hello Captain”. A mess crewman approaches MADISON with a tray of food and a cup. MADISON begins picking at his food the officers nervously resume a different conversation.
