Happy tenth anniversary to the time the Reading Chronicle didn’t know what a plant room is.
Crane disruption
AN enormous crane that will lift a room full of plants into a 14 sto-rey building will close town cen-tre roads in October.
Station Road and Garrard Street will be shut and Friar Street and Blagrave Street reversed between 5am October 15 and 5am October 17. The temporary measures will allow contractors working on the Thames Tower to install a 500 tonne crane that will put a prefabricated plant room onto the roof of the building.

Here's a twist on Canadian legend Alanis Morissette's song "Ironic" (who was amazing when one of us saw her live last month). It's an acoustic version about Trump's #USCanada #tariffs, #tradewar and his attempted renaming of #LakeOntario. It's called "Moronic" 🎶 - lyrics: youtu.be/Y6OGKFQBG7s

#Agapanthus time in our London garden. Brought just 2 small rhizomes back from Madeira 30 years ago and left them to it. Tried planting seeds but tbh better to let them grow where they want and move them if that’s not the right place! Always reliable and beautiful.

Great letter from Paul Ramsbottom, CEO of the Wolfson Foundation in the Times today
Fundiendo the arts
Sir, I heartily endorse Laura Freeman's arguments ("Get rid of philanthropy and we lose the arts"
', comment, Jun I). The Wolfson
Foundation has given £2 billion to charitable activities in the UK since it was founded over 70 years ago. While we are best known for our funding of medical research, we have provided longstanding and significant funding for the heritage and cultural sectors.
What a dull, colourless society it would be if all funding went to cover the essentials and we lost the vibrancy and insight (not to mention economic and health benefits) of heritage and culture. Civic health surely involves more than physical health. It should include curiosity, education and knowledge as well as an understanding of how we might function healthily as a society. And for that, philanthropy - as well as government - needs to support heritage and culture.

Reform is a protest party. A protest against decency, integrity, kindness, expertise, and progress. It's a party of pettiness and hate, and it is made up of petty and hateful people from the grassroots to the very top. What it doesn't have is competence. So good luck with the bins and potholes.

This is brilliant to see! Made around the time I started cycling in London mid 80s. Lots has changed but in other ways it’s all familiar- love the confidence of the cyclists shown in heavy traffic. A trip down memory lane too. Who else had those bulky (and dim!) Eveready grey bike lights? #cycling

The newly restored church of St Stephen Walbrook in the City of London. An interior of Portland and Bath Stone with an altar of Tivoli Travertine by Henry Moore #urbangeology #london
The interior of the church with a dome and a lantern through which light enters the buildings, however there are also lots of windows. The alter is below the centre of the dome and there are three Corinthian columns in each corner. The altar of the church is sculpted from a single block of Tivoli Travertine from near Rome.

Now then, that reminds me I saw Ed Tudor Pole as Judas Iscariot in Jesus Christ Superstar in the very early 80s in Birmingham - my lovely uncle and aunt who took me hated it, but as an impressionable 12/13yr old I knew I’d lucked out - especially when he got his guitar out and started yelling 😂😂
