After more than 6 years of work, it's time to finish the article about my biggest professional challenge so far. Thank God I wrote a draft in 2023 with the progress at that point. It has web components 😏

A few months ago I started to make @limette.dev runtime agnostic. I also switched to @vite.dev for it's internal dev server and bundler. Now both, Deno and Vite are owned by @cloudflare.social. Both are written in Rust. They overlap a lot.

Deno is being acquired by Cloudflare for the celld project which leads to Deno's death.

Now that we've put Zena out there a bit, we're looking for collaborators of any sort. We especially need people to give feedback on the design choices from many different perspective: developer ergonomics, the type system, compiler architecture, etc. Anyone with any level of interest is welcome!

Recently I used ChatGPT/Codex for a project which uses web components. It made me realize I should finish the next version of Limette faster. LLMs are very good at writing web components/Lit and the support for Tailwind in Limette solves the visual consistency + less code. LLMs are also good at TW.

Porffor is now self-hosted, meaning it compiles itself with itself! This is made possible by Porffor's new rewrite, reducing its lines of code by >50% and making C output up to 5x more efficient! Here you can see the stats before and after the rewrite for Porffor itself:
Porffor selfhost rewrite graphs, before vs after.

bundle lines 40.4K→24.7K (1.6x smaller)
bundle size 2.4MB→2.0MB (1.2x smaller)

C lines 1.6M→289.0K (5.5x smaller)
C size 70.4MB→12.3MB (5.7x smaller)

debug compile time 5.0s→1.2s (4.1x faster)
release compile time 143.2s→37.1s (3.9x faster)

debug binary size 52.4MB→13.6MB (3.8x smaller)
release binary size 14.1MB→4.6MB (3.1x smaller).

After migrating the banking app to Vite/Vitest, it's time for our internal library of web components to do the jump. It's way easier to do it this time. Simpler config + the experience from the previous migration.

I was investigating a Woo shop for being too slow. It seems Redis Object Cache was the main issue in my case. A plugging that should improve performance, it doubles the page load, from 5s to 10s. Another interesting finding is the meta-webindexer, which was killing my server. 64GB/day. Why?

After migrating a not so small app from Webpack to @vite.dev, it became more clear the real power of Vite: plugins. Even though it's supposed to offer a lot of defaults to give a lightweight config, those don't work in complex apps. But plugins can unlock almost any limitation. And...

This is literally me while I'm migrating to @vite.dev and @vitest.dev. Once again I think Webpack is way underestimated. After months of work, today I configured vitest for coverage. The performance is dead. From 2-3 min to 27 min? 2-3 min was already just like Karma/Webpack/Jasmine, but 27 min??

Well the joy didn't last. With isolation off, mock implementations get leaked in other files that use the original implementation at import time. 😪 Is this the final boss?

I'm still digging this issue and I might have found a @developer.chrome.com bug. When running @vitest.dev in browser mode with Chrome, there is a spike of some deleted but opened temp files by Chrome. In low space environments, this can hit the max limit which crushes vitest.

Now, I need to migrate the unit tests. From Karma+Jasmine to Vitest or @web/test-runner. The app is mostly based on Web Components with Lit and some legacy code with AngularJS.

After many many tries, the migration from Webpack to Vite is almost done. Many times I was so close to give up and go for Rspack. I'm still not 100% sure if Vite is better than Rspack for this app. Webpack might be complex, but it does a lot of things under the hood.

Why does @vite.dev preview command inject inline CSS? Shouldn't be a simple http server that serves static files (+ proxies and other configs if any)?

Marius Vatasoiu @mariusvatasoiu.com · 17/07/2025
Is there a way to inject js files programmatically in @vite.dev? The usual document.createElement('script) and then document.body.appendChild()? One of the files is loaded conditionally at runtime and must be loaded before the main entrypoint. I tried a lot of things, but no luck 😞

Time to migrate a Webpack / Karma / Jasmine SPA (Lit & AngularJS) to a new stack. So many alternatives. Current options on the table: @vite.dev + @vitest.dev @rspack.dev + Rstest (not ready yet) Rollup / @rolldown.rs + @web/dev-server + @web/test-runner Or combinations between them.
