Today was a happy hour for a conference I’m attending about public parks in the US. I talked with a park director from Missouri for 30 minutes about emerald ash borer, tree species diversity, and nature education. I was just grinning the entire time, it was so much fun!

If you're interested in birds at all (evolution, biology, scientific discoveries) I highly recommend The Wonder of Birds by Jim Robbins. I have a few articles in the works to deep dive into a couple chapters. It was a great editing job, too, I know he had to condense a lot, which is so hard.

Finished reading The Ferryman by Justin Cronin. He pulls you into the world, and the main character development is so strong that it had me feeling worried, angry, disgusted, and also some how happy for the main character. Still thinking about the book today, which is always a good sign.

This is funny, because people always assume I'm originally from the east coast (I'm not), and I've never been to Maryland. I think this is mostly because I was raised by people who were much older than me (also not from Maryland though) and I picked up their pronunciations.

This is a heat map that shows where your dialect is most likely from. The east coast is red, middle america is blue and yellow. And the west coast is a mix of lighter shades of blue, yellow, and red. The text says: Redder areas talk more like you; bluer areas least. You talk most like someone from Maryland. About 55% of your answers match a typical resident.

The more I read about animals, the more I wonder if what limits our understanding of animal behavior comes from a limit in perception. Birds can see UV light, but humans can't. So a crow that looks black to us look varying shades of violet to other birds. Basically, birds look one way to us an

Spent the morning reading "The Hole" by Hiroko Oyamada. I read a lot so am used to getting pulled into stories, but this one was such a page-turner. It's a short, quick read, which was fun. It's also creepy, unnerving, sad, and beautifully written and translated.

Yesterday I learned about ethno-ornithology and I've never been so interested in a subject. Ethno-ornithology is a field of study that looks at how birds and stories of birds have contributed to culture creation. It's research, but based around people and their relationship with birds. Wild.

On Saturdays, I make my coffee and then wander around the garden with my shears. I deadhead the roses, clear out old branches, and cut a couple blooms that are just opening up. These are my Eden Climbers, and last a solid week after being picked!

Spent yesterday removing a Choisya and replacing it with a more native Manzanita cultivar. Changes like this always scare me because it makes things look temporarily bare. Making changes like this has to be thought through. I liked the Choisya because it was evergreen and bloomed. But

The cool thing about weightlifting is that when I garden I can see how much easier and lighter tasks get. Every week, month, year I have repeatable chores I have to do and the stuff I have to move around keeps getting lighter. Such a cool feeling.
