Ballpoint pen, watercolor, colored pencil, a little crayon, and charcoal pencil.

Our guy pulls up deep in the forest on his 2-speed bike. He’s flanked by tall dark trees and his path is blocked by a massive spider. He lets the Big Fella know it’s on. “Big Fella,” he says. “I fixed my 2-speed. You still wanna race.” Reader, you know Big Fella wants in on that action. Next slide.Against a starry night sky we see silhouettes of Big Fella and our man racing down a hill. It’s unclear in the drawing who will win but Big Fella is likely about to pull away.

Our first Launch Week 🥹 We really crafted it with so much love: a major release for our dashboarding framework, events like a workshop with @infobeautiful.bsky.social, and deep dives along the way.

Today was a happy hour for a conference I’m attending about public parks in the US. I talked with a park director from Missouri for 30 minutes about emerald ash borer, tree species diversity, and nature education. I was just grinning the entire time, it was so much fun!

The USDA wants to repeal the 2001 Roadless Rule, and you have until October 6th to comment. Submitted comments must be reviewed, and if they aren't, it sets the basis for litigation. Here's the impact if the Roadless Rule is repealed: 1. Increased risk of fire: 88% of wildfires are started by

So much of learning to draw is drawing the same or similar things over and over to really see the pattern and shape of what you’re trying to make. Anyway, I’ve drawn about 30 hellebores flowers right now and my 30th looks way better than my first.

If you're interested in birds at all (evolution, biology, scientific discoveries) I highly recommend The Wonder of Birds by Jim Robbins. I have a few articles in the works to deep dive into a couple chapters. It was a great editing job, too, I know he had to condense a lot, which is so hard.

Finished reading The Ferryman by Justin Cronin. He pulls you into the world, and the main character development is so strong that it had me feeling worried, angry, disgusted, and also some how happy for the main character. Still thinking about the book today, which is always a good sign.

This is funny, because people always assume I'm originally from the east coast (I'm not), and I've never been to Maryland. I think this is mostly because I was raised by people who were much older than me (also not from Maryland though) and I picked up their pronunciations.
This is a heat map that shows where your dialect is most likely from. The east coast is red, middle america is blue and yellow. And the west coast is a mix of lighter shades of blue, yellow, and red. The text says: Redder areas talk more like you; bluer areas least. You talk most like someone from Maryland. About 55% of your answers match a typical resident.

The more I understand how differently animals perceive and move through the world, I just wonder if it's even possible to devise the right kind of tests to understand them. We're quite literally living in different realities because our perceptions and abilities are so different from each other.

The more I read about animals, the more I wonder if what limits our understanding of animal behavior comes from a limit in perception. Birds can see UV light, but humans can't. So a crow that looks black to us look varying shades of violet to other birds. Basically, birds look one way to us an

Spent the morning reading "The Hole" by Hiroko Oyamada. I read a lot so am used to getting pulled into stories, but this one was such a page-turner. It's a short, quick read, which was fun. It's also creepy, unnerving, sad, and beautifully written and translated.

First Dolly Parton, a model of living your life with kindness, generosity, and joy. And now Tim Curry, one of the most delightfully unhinged actors I ever had the pleasure of watching. From Ferngully to Rocky Horror Picture Show to Muppet Treasure Island to Clue. What a rough couple of days.
