My review of "Redshirts Sometimes Survive" by @finnwritesstuff.bsky.social, out from @offtopicpublishing.bsky.social . Unless you think Star Trek is too woke, you need to read this book!! www.goodreads.com/review/show/...
I loved this novella-in-flash, but before I tell you why, there's something I need to get out of the way: If you believe that Star Trek has gotten too "woke", Finnian Burnett's new book is not for you. Stop reading this review, and go find something else. Just trust me on this one.

Are you still here? Great! Let's continue.

"Redshirts Sometimes Survive" is only about Star Trek at the surface level. Beneath that, you'll find an examination of what it's like to be trans, queer, fat, or in any way Othered, in a universe that is nothing like the Federation that accepts everybody as themselves. Jean-Luc Picard is not our father, though we wish he could be. Nobody like Janeway exists here. (As witnessed in the story "What Would Janeway Do?" "Janeway would speak up. Janeway wouldn't side with Nazis and fascists. But I'm not the kind of person who speaks up. I'm not a leader. I'm not important. To anyone. Not even myself.")

Full disclosure: I'm a straight, cis, white woman. I'm fat, but I haven't experienced nearly the fatphobia that some of Burnett's characters do throughout this book. So what Burnett is describing in these stories does not reflect my own reality. EXCEPT. I understand what it's like not to feel comfortable in my own skin, to feel like an outcast, to wonder whether I'll ever really find my people. As a result, I identified very strongly with so many of the characters, and came close to tears so many times when they finally found acceptance, either within themselves, within their found families, or even through watching the newer editions of Star Trek.

Acceptance, as in "New Life and New Civilizations": "We learned each other's real names. the ones we whispered to ourselves in the mirror before we had the courage to say them out loud. The names that weren't given to us, but the ones we claimed. We heard our names from each other's mouths and we became real." Who doesn't long for this kind of love and understanding?

These are good ideas because they're my ideas. My obsessions, my phobias, my subconscious and thoughts and memories. I don't want someone else's stuff! It's so boring when someone tells you 'I have an idea for your next book!' because it doesn't mean anything to you.

Yup. I continue to say that AI is for those who fetishize THE IDEA and dismiss THE WORK. It's for those people who come up to writers and say, "I got a great idea for a book, I'll give it to you, you write it, and we'll split the profits 50/50," as if the idea is the hardest and most important part.
