Super Mario Sunshine is surprisingly more realistic than later Mario games in one specific aspect: here, Mario will start drowning if he hangs on to a ledge in such a way that water is flowing into his nose and mouth, as one would in real life.

Observe Mario holding on to a ledge that water is flowing over in Super Mario Galaxy (left) and Super Mario Odyssey (right). If realistic physics applied, he should start drowning since his nostrils and mouth are covered by water flowing into them.
However, in these games the air depletion/drowning state is tied to the swimming animation. As long as Mario is not visibly swimming, he cannot be drowning even if he is covered by water.
In Super Mario Sunshine, however, air depletion is decoupled from swimming as an action, allowing Mario to realistically start drowning in this situation (note him flashing red and his air meter depleting).
However, he is saved by Sunshine's (also unique among 3D Mario platformers) ledge tiredness mechanic. After hanging on for 20 seconds, Mario will let go. This is also realistic, since why would he let himself drown?

How I would handle designing Female Toads if they appeared in Mario games like mainline titles outside of RPGs. Honestly it would feel right if they were in those games. This was a long time project I've done and tried to make them a bit gender-neutrel looking seperate from Toadette and feel generic

@nitrorad.bsky.social You ever gonna talk about the Pac-Man World 2 remake? I just feel like if you ever do, you should really mention how much better Pac-Man has been doing as a franchise since then because man, things have never looked brighter.

It was also during this time that I was hearing a lot of "SEGA should just stop making Sonic games" online so it doesn't surprise me as much that they actually considered listening.

I was there in the 2010s and yeah it's because Sonic games weren't doing so hot. Highs like Colors and Generations weren't being hit consistently or seen as a fluke once the Boom tie-in games were out. People also suggested Nintendo buy Mega Man citing Smash as "proof" they care more than Capcom.

as much as i wasn't hinging everything on specifically 3d mario and was moreso hoping for any new mario game of any kind, it is kind of amusing how the longer it gets since odyssey, the LESS people tolerate hearing from people who want 3D Mario.

This kinda makes me super sad. Not that adults buying kids toys is inherently sad like hell yeah whatever, but the scale of this just makes me think about how shitty things are. From 'thats when I remember being happy' to 'We can't afford to have kids, but I was looking forward to sharing toys..."

I like that they're doing classic and modern, but I also feel like they shouldn't restrict classic to 2D and modern to 3D. if they keep focusing on doing the same kind of game just because of the chosen art style/direction, it's going to make each game in that pillar blend in with one another imo.
